Hi all
I've recently acquired a 2000 TC, 68 model I think. Won't go into how I got her but she eventually arrived in Sydney from Brisbane on the back of a towtruck with a locked up gearbox. Gearbox has now been repaired, (previous poor repair job a few years back) and is now back home. I'm about to get the engine out to do a few (hundred) things then join engine and gearbox together and reinstall. Easy as! Not. Anyway I'm enjoying reading all the good info here and I will have a few questions that I will post. Can't quite work out how to use the forum though.
 
Welcome, and good luck with your efforts. I too am about to put the engine (just rebuilt) and gearbox back into my 2000 TC. It's a bit scary with all that weight. It all keeps us busy during the lockdown, though.

Ok so engine is out with assistance of a big strong person. My impression is that the more bits you can remove - oil filter, mounts etc the easier it is. Not looking forward to putting it back in with gearbox attached but we will see.
 
Hi all
I acquired the car with gearbox and clutch out and a box of bolts and bits. Engine is now out, seems in pretty good condition and clutch is being assessed by a clutch person. Worked out some of the bolts for the clutch so that only leaves about 15 bolts & nuts and washers to place. It is great working in the engine bay without the engine in the way. Got the heater out today, not a pretty sight. So 2 questions:
1. can anyone identify this part for me? (clutch actuating fork?), and
2. Re the heater. Is it possible to dismantle the heater by drilling out the rivets and re-assemble it with maybe small screws? Or would it be better to try and find someone down under to do a complete rebuild? I see a big green tube electrical thingy which I assume is an old resistor for the 2 speed fan.
Also not sure if I should join these questions onto another post.
Any suggestions as usual much appreciated.

1) Speedo clamp gearbox end.

2) Parts of the heater are held by screws anyway, so there shouldn't a problem replacing the rivets unless the screws are too long and foul something on the inside.
 
Thanks very much Harvey I'll let you know how it goes. I'm sort of waiting on parts at present, alternator from UK, rubber bits from scotts in Melbourne, engine mounts from local person.
 
I rebuilt a heater to go in at some point. As Harvey says they are not difficult. The matrix did take a bit of extracting, the case needed to be tweeked open to get it out and then re folded after. I sourced 3mm foam from ebay.
 
Thanks for the heater encouragement..I got mine out pretty easily as the engine is out, matrix has been pressure tested and is ok, not sure about the fan though. Got the foam and glue but other events have arisen.....namely:
Got the VW engine mounts and new bolts, adjusted them a little and all ready to go except....found a snapped off stud for the engine support embedded in the block, and of course it's the front LH stud under the carbies etc. Don't know if the previous owner was driving around with a missing stud for the support but seems a bit risky. The big locknut is still on it so if I can get that off I will have about 1/4" of stud to play with, which will probably snap off if I try and turn it. Assuming it has to be extracted somehow I think that will involve carbies and exhaust manifold off. So my question at present is: Is it possible to get the TC carbies and heat shield out without dismantling the carbies as the Haynes manual suggests? Or any suggestions for removing the stud without a lot of swearing and broken drill bits etc?

If the big nut is still fitted to the stud the chances are when you try to undo that it will bring the stud out with it.

If it comes to removing the carbs, just undo them at the manifold to head joint and lift them out of the way towards the bulkhead and rest it all there. You shouldn't even need to remove the choke cable.
 
Thanks once again Harvey. Unfortunately someone, (the mechanic?) had already loosened the locknut so there's about 3/8" of stud left. I might try heating it and using left twist drills and/or those bolt extractor things. Anyway I'll get the carbs and manifold off first....
 
Carbies and manifold came off easily, so can also clean things up a bit easier before engine goes back in. I did think about the weld option but in the end stud came out pretty easily - cut a groove in the side and tapped it gently with hammer and cold chisel and it came right out. Thought I might try to make a substitute one out of a high tensile bolt eg lock the bolt in with a nut, washer and some liquid gasket then cut the end off and presto! instant stud! Not as good as the real thing but should do until I can track one down. Hopefully get that sorted tomorrow then back to the heater...

well plans to make an engine stud came to zero as i cannot source an appropriately threaded bolt or piece of rod, so will try and source one. Good news is that the new alternator arrived from the UK in record time by DHL.
Anyway on to the next question, could anyone help me identify this part?unknown part.JPG

One job seems to lead to another at present...
The other thing I acquired which is really useful is a Rover parts catalogue, even though it is for an early SC so some things are a bit different...but the diagrams are very handy.
 
The part in your photo is gear change steady that links the gearbox with the gear change plate (the plate under the tunnel that bears the gear change lever). It is fitted only on series 1 4 cylinder cars.
 
just had my heater unit out and now back in car after cleaning .soldering matrix . oh and replacing some foam. I posted. it on a different thread with a few pics! see if I can load a couple here too. Thanks classicalgreen for the heater pics, I managed to track down your thread and see the other pics. Is the heater working ok now? Put mine on hold for a bit while I get gearbox, engine and clutch sorted. BTW did you replace the big square rubber seal at the back of the heater? Mine has dried out and gone rather hard so I was thinking of buying some rubber and cutting another one.

Hi folks
I'm ready (almost) to put the engine and gbox back in the car. Questions is, do people consider it easier to put the gbox in first then the engine or both in together? Would seem to need a steep angle to put both in together but maybe easier than reuniting them under the car?
