Noise when revved

Hi there,
Any wisdom welcome.
I have a 2200sc, it’s running lovely, power across the Rev band and pulls like a train. But for a while now it does a high pitched rattle noise when revved hard and quickly, both on the acceleration and sometimes on the de acceleration of the engine. Almost sounds like a vibrating heat shield or something. It only does it when driven hard and I’ve not noticed it while cruising.

It’s quite a high mileage engine 95k, but had a new head about 3k. Also has 160psi across all cylinders. (Not that that would make any difference of course)
Any insight would be appericated.
Cheers
Peter

If you look at where the carb joins the manifold there is a black insulator about 5/8" thick, and there is a metal tube within that which aligns the insulator to the manifold. The tube breaks or comes adrift and causes a noise. Undo the 4 nuts holding the carb and move the carb out of the way and you should see if that is your problem.

Thanks Harvey I’ll take a look this weekend!
if it’s a drift. Any advice on fixing it back in place? Is it a job for araldite?

That insert would make a pretty light noise wouldnt it? Just in case its not that item, and a heavier noise ..... I saw once a 4cyl engine making strange noises that most observers could not fathom. With the cam cover off, nothing amiss was visible. With the sump off though the chain anti-slap guide (not sure of technical name) for the primary chain was loose and rattling up and down - the mounting 'ears' had both broken off where it bolted to the block.

Just found my 2000 parts book....Item 58 here, Part no 504341, lower chain vibration damper.

Hi Guys,
So I took the carb off and found the sleeve has already been removed. Must have been removed before I got the car (20 years ago).
But I have found the cause! The exhaust mounted on the down pipe has split in two! I wedge the down pipe with a bar and the rattle goes away.
At least it’s an easy fix.

Thanks for the help any who!
