Noisy New Motor

Good to hear that you've now driven a bit quicker and that your car seems to be getting quieter!
Mike has already helpfully mentioned lots of things that can make unnerving noises in the engine bay, to which I can only add that if all the exhaust manifold bolts themselves aren't completely tight, the exhaust manifold can clatter against the head which makes an awful racket! Sounded like rod knock once when I was on the motorway, had me fearing the worst, turned out to be a simple issue of a couple of the rearmost exhaust manifold bolts not sufficiently tightened! I also found that my air cleaner canister needed new rubbers on those two locating bolts sticking up from the back of the intake manifold. The old ones had perished and so the whole air cleaner can was making unwanted noises as it vibrated/wobbled.
The air filter 'snorkel' looks a bit naked without the mesh shield and wide rubber gasket on the top. I replaced my rusty mesh with stainless, re-purposed from a new kitchen sieve, trimmed and shaped to fit and tucked painstakingly into the original metal rim/lip. It added a bit of sparkle, and being right on top of the engine it made for a shiny 'finishing touch'. The flexible warm air hose has an inner and outer part. Yours looks to be a bit on the short side. The outer should stretch over that upright metal pipe stub with the 90 degree bend, insulating and concealing it.
That TC looks gorgeous. Is the paint metallic?

Hello

This shows you never should buy on the internet as it is a trick of the light. This is a solid driver but the paint is "worn" original. I don't want to speak out of turn as the car is used almost daily as I understand it which is an admirable position of a proper enthusiast unlike myself in the weekend perfect weather only category.

I had purchased the new canister rubbers so that is nicely damped. And I checked out my air intake rubber bit and am reminded the rubber no longer goes over the edges and it looks better without it. And it does expose one of my proudest achievements - functioning temp flapper valve.

Did a bunch more miles at the weekend, I think improvements have slowed down but only 150 miles or so into it so hopefully there's more metal to be smoothed out, rubbed off, or what.......

It can also poison you in conjunction with a perished rear bonnet seal. Ask me how I know....

Yes Adrian thats the bit i was talking about... The parts drawing show the top part as a rectangular cone, which is probably what it looked like in 1969 and unused. Yours is probably like mine and flat by now. I have a plan to print them when I finally get settled into my new shed....

I am glad the car has quietened down!
