OCC 469 - restoring & running a "sharkstooth" 2000

Perhaps about 10 weeks to target MOT now

A bit of progress this week:

The drive shaft with the yellow bands was originally off a prototype according to the late & great Ian Wilson. I've still not got a replacement for the o/s so have resorted to a standard one for now. The doors will stay as they are for the hopeful MOT & 'shake-down' period.

OCC 469 is starting to look like a P6 again. It's the first time its had wings on for possibly 35 years! The wheels on the floor have been blasted & painted satin black & will hopefully get their tyres this coming week.

I've booked it into Bowes in May & will do for Sledmere in June, so fingers crossed!

looking good. Right colour too.
I wasn't sure about City Grey being much of a colour but I really like it, especially now I've got some chrome on.

Can I just say that's the first photo I've seen of Dunlop brakes on a P6... They look sturdy, what with that external fluid line between the halves.

I bought some new bushes for the rear top links to finish the rear suspension rebuild & have now removed the top links.

The problem now is that the ends of the links are far too narrow for the bushes I've got  . I didn't realise there were any variations. Are 4 cyls' bushes different along with their links being straight, or is it yet another early 2000 anomaly? :?

Hi Phil

The 4 cylinder cars have the same bush (570490) on either end of the top link and the link is straight. The V8's have a different bigger bush on the back (558651), the front is the smaller one the same as on the 4 cyl (570490) and the arm is cranked to allow the fitment of a wider road wheel.

Pat

Thanks Pat.

I have now been able to check the bushes on a spare V8 set I have & they are as you say. However, the front ones are like that in the picture that I've just got - ie: too big for a 'Sharkstooth'!! Problems, problems.....looks like I'll have to substitute a set of standard 4 cylinder ones at least for the time being.

So, I would be very grateful if anyone has a spare set of 2000 top links they would sell me please? The condition of the bushes is irrelevant.

Many thanks.

I've moved onto the front hubs now & I would like to ask a perhaps dumb question...

Were all 2000 front brake discs the same? I'm looking to get my '64 car's skimmed as they are pretty thick even if somewhat rusty, but wondered if I could get any new ones. I have only ever seen rear discs advertised specifically for Dunlop cars & have never found any fronts so designated. :?

I am jumping back to your posts on the rear top links, I have come across the same problem with my car, JR Wadhams do the correct bush part number - 534713 at £30 each! But with being a bit tight I've opted for using later link rods with the bigger bush working about £60 for the pair.
Can't help you with the discs though, not got that far on mine yet.

I have now moved onto the front hubs. I am having the discs skimmed as I can't seem to find any new ones for an early car.

I have also started to rebuild the front brakes. I had the calipers blasted several years ago & am now putting everything back together. There is a little pitting in the piston bores, although this would appear to be in the section that will not come into contact with the seal, so I'm going to see how it goes when I've replaced the seals.

One part I seem to be missing is one of the four pad retainers. I seem to remember having one around years ago (probably to see if I could get a spare at an autojumble) but can't find it now  . Does anyone out there with a Sharkstooth 2000 have a spare one I could purchase, please? This is what I mean:

Meanwhile, the engine is almost ready to tune (it does run after its rebuild) :D :

& I'm now getting some panels back on:

The rear end is complete; the front wings will go on when I've done the brakes, although I have trial-fitted them.

My next difficulty is the exhaust....

Does anyone happen to have a 'middle' box that they would be happy to sell me? On early cars, this does not have any supports / hooks - it is kept up by a fixing from the diff extension support where the rear lower links are secured.

I'm having problems fitting the one I've got which is for a post-66 car, but I can't find a correct one.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Mark Gray had some early exhaust sections advertised on his website IIRC. Failing that search out a local exhaust specialist to make one or modify the one you have.

Thanks for that - I did look a while ago but didn't see any then, but I think there's a suitable one now :D

Next problem... fitting the front wings:

The original wings (not present when I got the car) must have had some pressings so that they sat closer to the base unit. The threaded bosses that the bolts go into stand round 6mm proud all round. I don't know whether to modify the wings (all nicely painted :( ) or grind the end of the bosses off :?

How does it look with the bonnet on?

You could trim the mountings by a few mm and even press a dish in to the wing with some sockets and a nut and bolt.
