oil pressure checking guage?

hi there,
I wish to check the actual oil pressure on the V8 engine, I suspect that dash gauge is not correct or possibley the sensor on the engine is a duff one?
Firstly is the sensor the one near the oil filter housing?
I would need to buy a good oil pressure gauge and somehow fit it in place of the engine block gauge to obtain a true reading!
what do I need and how to fix it all up?

Thinking about the last post, I have 2 cars, same year, so the oil pressures senders should be the same, thread 1/2" unf /20 tpi.
I could swap the senders and see if the readings are the same? that would eliminate the possibility of having a dodgy sender on one car?
has anyone done this swap and the result?
Peter

Hi ButterFingers.

I bought a capillary oil gauge and substituted it for the smaller sender, the one used for the oil light. Then I ran both of them together so I could see the difference.

hi,
today was a cooler day of below 45 deg c and I ventured into the shed for the first time in 2 weeks. To hot before..........
I had a look at the oil pressure gauge sender on both cars, and find that even if the car is on the hoist, it is almost impossible to access?
I lowered the car to the ground and had a look.
Almost the same, severely restricted access, so this is the question.
Q: is it best to access and remove the oil pressure sender from above or from bellow the car?
my guess is that this is a Harvey Question?

the reason that I want to do this is to swap pressure sensors to test the oil pressure on "Nelson" , the best of the bunch....

oh , I previously spent the afternoon swapping the oil pressure gauge for a spare one that I had in an instrument cluster...the result was that it did not work at all , no ammeter and no oil gauge, total waste of time but that's the fun of owning an old RollsRover

most are not 1/2 inch unf and 20 tpi, so how did you buy a modern one and fit it?
where did you find it?

I'm fairly certain the gauge came with something like this

You screw this in and then screw the original sender into the other end. You then have a take off in the middle for your capillary gauge.

All you need to do is find one with the correct threads. Try ebay - Land Rover Series 1 Smiths Oil Pressure Gauge Capillary Hose & Block Adapter Kit | eBay

Rockdemon has mine at the moment; if you ask him nicely, he may take a piccy of it for you :)

hi there,
in trying to find an adapter for attaching a capillary gauge to the oil filter sender , I found this interesting article on NPT threads and what they can fit.
Fuel Product info page
it may be of use to others when sourcing adapters for various fittings on a car.
