Oil pressure transmitter.

How do I test my oil pressure transmitter. ? The oil pressure gauge has stopped working . My oil pressure light goes out as soon as I start the car and there is plenty of oil reaching the rocker cover . I would like to be sure it is the transmitter before I shell out for a new one due to their high cost . My car is a p6 2000 .1972 series 2 . Thank you in advance .
 
Pull the wire off the sender (transmitter) and ground it to the block or other earth, the gauge should go to max.
OK strictly speaking you are not testing the sender, but testing everything else. If the gauge goes to max then the sender is at fault, if the gauge does not move then repeat the test with another gauge if possible. Two non reading gauges would indicate a wiring or circuit board problem.
To test the sender on its own you would need a multimeter and a compressed air supply. You would need to pressurise the sender and take resistance readings from zero to 100 psi to see if the sender was working.

Thank you Cobraboy . Did as you advised and yes the gauge went to max . All I have got to do now is find a reasonably priced one , wish me luck . Regards Jim.

If it were mine, I would look for a secondhand working original. The reproduction ones cost a fortune and are poorly made.
If you have to buy new go for one from a recognised supplier from whom you will be able to get an exchange / refund.

BTW Although looking the same these senders can have different threads and work on differing resistance ranges.

Remember - If it was easy they'd all be doing it ;)
 
The senders are bigger, chunky things. It would be good to convert the gauge to be an actual pressure unit but l don't know of anyone who's actually done it on a P6. I did it on my P5B but that simply meant changing the gauge & fitting a feed pipe. Not as simple with the S2's instrument binnacle.
