I'm not opposed to tank engines, in fact I've been for a drive in one today

Thing is, in the museum bit, they had this: -

Twin crank, one at the top and pistons meeting (well not quite) in the middle. Heard of them, but never actually seen one before

The Main Stealer I worked for had a complete P6 cutaway like that. I assume it was a Motor Show exhibit.

OPOC is one of the names given to the idea, Opposed Piston, Opposed Cylinder.
A famous engine of this layout was the Junkers Jumo series, which were the first successful Diesel aero engines, developed in the 1930s.
