P38 4.0 Litre in P6 ?

Good Morning,
Is it possible to install a p38 in the P6?
- fits the intake manifold?
- Does the exhaust manifold fit?
-What about the front cover, a front cover of 3.5 can be used?
- Fit the engine holder
-.... all other questions I need to know
 
Been done with the later engine in 4.6 form lots of times. In each case I know of, the older type of front cover is used, not the serpentine arrangement. Everything fits as the heads are all interchangeable from the first to last RV8.

does the old frontcover fit to the 42D engine?
does the flywheel also fit to the crankshaft ?
is that still possible with hif 6? or must 4 liters get more mix?
 
Sparky's engine is a 4L, cross bolted unit designed for the Range Rover. I think it's only the block and crank though, as the heads are stage 1 SD1 items, headers are bespoke but the P6 ones would fit, front cover is SD1 (I think :confused:), engine mounts bolt straight on so would fit ok, flywheel is SD1, etc.

The standard P38 4L isn't that powerful though, why are you changing it?

The P38 exhaust manifolds cannot be used as the design won't fit within the P6 engine bay. The flywheel is a straight fit onto the P38 crankshaft, but there is a locating dowel that you will need to grind off.
The HIF6 carburettors will need some changes, especially with the needles, along with larger air filters and an appropriate air canister.

Is there a reason for this, or is it aesthetic only?

My understanding John is that there is a clearance issue. The P38 front cover also includes an integrated crankshaft driven oil pump, with the filter facing straight down. In the case of the P6B and SD1 front covers, the oil filter being at an angle clears the cross member.

It's not an issue if you use a remote oil filter like I have ;)
You do have less off the shelf camshaft options, plus the reverse rotation waterpump, plus you need to sort out a coil pack ignition system. But the serpentine arrangement is better in many ways, oil pump, all steel timing gears as standard, it's shallower so there's more room for thicker radiators/fans etc etc.
Most people have reverse engineered to the p6 setup because they can use all the ancillaries as they were previously, alternator, power steering pump etc and therefore the car remains stock looking.
