Went to show a mate my P6 yesterday and it has a small amount of water in the front footwells, anyone got a clue as to where it's coming in from?? Cheers joe :D

do they suffer from leaky heater vents then? Its not been running for a while so wouldn't have thought the later....

think if you have heavy rain and the footwell vents are left open you can get water in... Never had it happen on mine though. Maybe someone else has had it happen and can provide more guidance!

If the vertical sill carpet in the footwell is damp, then you have rust holes in the A - post screen pillars, which start where the stainless trim is riveted in. Not such a bad job to do actually. I've had to do it several times, even on pretty good base units!

Hello Joe,

Another possible cause is the sealing rubber along the lower edge of the windscreen. The rubber is formed in the shape of a gutter and sits between the windscreen and the valance. It directs water that runs down the windscreen across to each side where it can run away down between the front wings and the base unit, exiting at the front of the car. When the rubber perishes, water runs straight down the windscreen into the heater vent and comes out through the air vents in each footwell, giving you a wet foot if you happen to be sitting there at the time.

You can inspect the rubber by removing the wiper arms and lifting off the valance beneath. Poor some water onto your windscreen and watch where the water goes. If you place some paper in each footwell and it ends up wet you will have your answer.

These rubbers are available from J R.Wadhams and are of excellent quality.

i get this , when i wash the car there will be a small amount of water on the rubber overmats next to the gearbox tunnel , i replaced the windscreen lower seal and removed the heater and checked the rubbers etc but it still happens , maybe close off the heater flap when washing the car, cheers rich

mine leaks around the acclerator rod drops off the heater box and runs down the rod and drips on to the floor

Has it got a perished rubber grommet? :)

yea its got a rubber grommet i got a new 1 to go on just not stuck it on yet well i have had 3 p6's and all have leaked round there

Having not had the scuttle panle off do i need 1 of those seals from Wadhams or a pair of them? Has anyone got a photo of what i'm looking for? Cheers

It might be a good idea to find out where the water is coming from before taking the car apart to replace bits. It might be coming from further back and running forward etc. Small amount of water in the front could be lots more water in the back. I would take the carpets outs and check the floor pan for any tell-tale rusty streaks indicating where water is tracking. If you think it's coming in from above spinkle some talc on the floor and get a hose on the car from above. If water is running in from above it'll show up as tracks in the talc. If it's coming from underneath you can run the car with newspaper on the floor and see where the damp spots are as the water soaks into the paper.

Tracking down where water is getting into the car can be a long drawn out process.

Good luck finding it.

Mmm.

Well, as you can read above, there's no one favourite source. So let's summarise the possibles:

# missing / damaged rubber bungs, seals on the firewall

# leaking screen seal

# rust to A post (underneath the stainless trim)

# rust to firewall in box section behind steering idler / steering box

# rust to firewall in area of top link pivot

# rust to front of sill

# rust to join between sill and floor

# damaged rubber seals in heater box

# damage to heater box drain

# rust damage to front apron behind heater box / under screen seal

# damage to rain deflector on bottom screen seal above heater box.

To establish the actual cause, I suggest you remove the carpets under the aeats and in the footwells. Also remove the drop down shin bin glove boxes. Remove the insulation on the front bulkhead. Dust everything with talc powder or similar. Get busy with the hose! If you can't find anything with the hose, try driving the car in the wet in this condition. Prepare to be surprised where the leak is vs where the water appears!

You'll find it helpfull to have a copy of the spare parts manual handy as this has an exploded diagram of how everything goes together. That might give you a few inspirations!
