Hello all.
Just assembing the parts to convert my p6 v8 72 to power steer.
Is the track rod for power steering different to manual steer. If so how?
Thanks
Edward

Yes it is different, but you can use the non-PAS one. Non-pas has a female TRE at each end with a locknut, PAS has a turnbuckle at the drivers end with short and long male TRE's.

Thanks. Presumably the pas one is easier to adjust with the larger pas box restricting access?

That's the idea, but the adjuster is fitted on the PAS box side so it doesn't really make any difference. I suppose thet the two locknuts are closer together......

you will hopefully find a recess in the front cross member to give the pump some clearance too. The bolts for the pump bracket to engine are also of very specific length, any longer and you can't get them in without jacking the engine way up. I suggest that the adjuster is where it is because they originally designed it for the US, LHD cars where it would be more in the open.

As an aside the PS box was designed by a bloke called Arthur Bishop for Bendix. (who licensed it to Adwest for manufacture). If you look carefully at the manual you will notice that the variable ratio is the reverse of the manual steering box.

Surely it is possible to fit the PAS track rod with the turnbuckle over on the passenger side of the car, farther away from the PAS box, theoretically making it easier to access? Or am I missing something obvious? I have to change mine shortly, the NOS Unipart replacement is awaiting my most favoured mechanic's attentions.

The trackrod assy will fit either way around, although whether it's any easier to adjust the turnbuckle on one side or the other I wouldn't know. I've never had problems doing it on the normal position.

Thanks for the info. Not looking forward to the pas box swap from what i have heard. Planning to do the head gaskets at the same time which should imptive access. ( lowering compression with composites) .
Is there any real world gain in fitting sdi or later heads to a p6 block?
Cheers

Have a read here:

SD1 heads?

I have got a pair waiting to go onto my P5B along with a pair of Hif6's when we finally get round to getting her back on the road.
Looks like they need other parts changing too to get the full benefit.

Hello chaps.
Well all done with the pas conversion. Worth the effort. As was the head gasket replacment. Founf a blocked coolent passage on #2 cyl with a corresponding Slight gasket breach to the valley. Run into something with the wheel alignment . Ridiculous toe out when fitted. With the track rod (pas type) adjusted in fully there still appears to be too much toe out. Any ideas?

Anybody have aany experience /knowledge of fitting an electric pump to the hydraulic side of the system ? The pumps seem plentiful on the used market.
thanks

I had a Saxo electric PAS pump which I sold to TRM and I think is being fitted to Bruiser 2. I'm sure I have a Vauxhall one here somewhere as well although I can't remember what it came off. Probably Astra. That would be for sale if anyone wanted it.

Yes. It's on the list over at Richard Moon's but things haven't got to that stage yet though it'll probably be looked at in the next few weeks. It looks fairly straightforward as there are only a couple of components & what looks like minimal wiring.

So there are no pressure issues with these pumps connected to an old style steering box? Either too much or too little? Need a heavy power feed to work safely ?
