P6 V8 Auto Series 2

Hello everyone,

Sorry to be asking something straight away with my first post, but I’m wanting to join P6 ownership, having admired them for a long time!

I’m looking for a Series 2 V8 Auto. I know it’s pretty specific, but that really is what I’ve got in my head as the perfect P6 for me.

It must be in a drivable condition and must be presentable, as I’d also like to take it to shows. I’m certainly not fussed about pristine though, mechanical condition always takes priority. Something that’s ideally had some use recently and I can keep it up would be ideal. I bought another classic after a long lay-up period and that was a nightmare!

My budget is ideally £8000, but for the right car I could add a little more on top.

I’m located in Norfolk, but am certainly happy to travel.

If anyone has something that might be suitable to keep my classic Daimler company, or knows of anyone who might, then please do let me know!

Thank you,
Jonathan.

Good luck with your search, you should be able to get a nice car for that, but be careful, they hide their faults well.

Thank you for the advice, and it’s comforting to hear I’m not being unrealistic in terms of budget! I still do need to have a read through some P6 buying guides asap, as they definitely can (not only the body, but the V8 engine is one of those that just carries on in a dire state too!)

I paid more than that for my rover V8 auto with NO power steering .( try and get that!) car was solid but had been Lia dup for 13years as previous owner was elderly and refused to part with it even after he could not drive or maintain it . so he had done a fair bit with full respray ( not concours ) :( loads new stuff such as tyres.. still with mould 'bobbles?' on tread.. all dumped as 13 years standing in a garage made them unsafe to use. car has been a Money and time pit since. ( still is ) so get a car being driven !! ensure recent proper MOT. hand brake is notoriously poor. check under rear seats ( cushions lift up easily) and on boot. rear aches for rust bug. test drive is essential. kick down is by full pedal depression until you feel a 'click' under pedal at which point it ought to kick down to lower gear and hopefully start shifting.. check rad a these can leak. low pool pressure above 1500rpms is a serious issue. have a read car forums .eg classic rovers ..rover owner club etc and absorb tips. thus avoiding expensive errors ( I have made a few already) do ignore outer black sills as these are pure cosmetics .inner seal and floor pan need checking so DO lift carpets .

Thanks for all the advice above, I really appreciate it! I agree that buying a car which has been regularly used is always best, they’re just so hard to come across, most seem to do a couple of hundred miles a year if you’re lucky.

There is one in an auction coming up which is the colour combo and spec I imagined as my “perfect” P6, but sadly looks like it’s been untaxed for 10 years, so I imagine will end up a money pit. Also a very nice looking one in another auction, but the other side of the country, so a no go.

So the search continues, if anyone has anything! :D

I do have one which will be for sale at some point but it's currently not quite in an on the road condition:

Recommissioning of the Denovo 3500

She has been off the road for over ten years but we've been attending to things that tend to deteriorate over time in order to get her to a decent saleable condition. Progress is still at a bit of a standstill at present after the Covid adventure though & she's certainly not at the jump in & drive her away stage just yet.

Check the profile of "Matt Wood" on Facebook. He has just posted a 1972 Monza 3500 for sale.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm ideally looking for something a little more finished as I think if I hold out, my budget will get me that. :)

Just a little update, I’ve expanded my search a little. I’m open to manuals, and Series 2 2000/2200 TCs, as long as it has the nice rotary dash :D

There's a series 2 2000TC with a 2200TC engine fitted, on facebook. Would make a decent car.

Whoa, hold on just a minute. You ideal car is a series 2 V8 auto, now though it can be a 4 pot manual ?????

May I suggest you get out and drive some cars of each type, otherwise I feel sure that you are going to buy the wrong car and will regret it.

It's okay.. sooner or later he'll figure out that the series 1 cars are far superior to the series 2's ;)

Yes you’re correct, I was considering the 2200TC as its paper figures aren’t too bad…. But you’re right, it does have the be the V8.

And having seen both Series 1s and 2s, I’m probably in the smaller camp that prefer the latter :D

Now a 3500S I would consider though. My main concern wasn’t that I don’t like manuals (on classics it can be much more engaging!), but the horrors you can hear of V8s eating manual gearboxes. But I don’t think that alone is a reason to discount them.

So a Series 2 V8, auto or manual, it will be!
