P6 wheels - tubless or not?

Stupid question?

I got two new tyres fitted to my P6 3500 (S1) by an ex-Rover main dealer today. During the time the guy was fitting them, his boss came over to me and said "those aren't tubeless rims, they are the wrong shape for tubeless tyres and shoud have tubes in them."

I told him I always thought they were tubeless and they were designed as they are to keep the tyre in place in high speed cornering (that's what I was told a long time ago!). I also pointed out that the tyres he took off had no tubes in them. Anyway, he fitted them without tubes and put new valves in.

When I came home, I looked through the owners manual and it dosen't actually say, but it does mention if tubeless tyres are used, a special type of valve is required. I take it that that implies tubeless can be used!

I have been driving with tubeless tyres on it for as long as I can remember.

Can someone confirm one way or the other.

Thanks,

Colin

Thank you harveyp6, I thought that but cannot find it written anywhere.

Starting to doubt my own mind!

and how would they cope if a tyre went pop cos it had a tube fitted in a tubeless tyre with a rough inside?

IIRC early Sharkstooth 2000's do need tubes, but it's only the first couple of years with original wheels?

Mine certainly had tubes on it when we took the 30+ year old tyres off it a few years ago, and I have heard of others having them.

Just came across this in James Taylor's Rover P6 book - on page 37.

Quote "The first production P6s were fitted with either Dunlop SP tubless or Pirelli Cinturato tubed tyres as original equipment." 8)

Problem solved:

On the original sales brochure for the Three Thousand Five (back page) it says "Tyres: Avon radial, tubeless, size 185HRx14." Might show them this when I'm going down for tyres for my 75 shortly.

Hi, What age was the manager? Most modern tubeless rims have safety beads on them
which P6 rims do not, which is why he queried it. Tyre shops are alright changing
tyres with there pneumatic bead breakers, but when I'm trying to remove tyres with a
slide bead breaker the language can get quite colourful :)

Hi Colin (Colnerov),

He looked to be in his 40s. Yes he referred to a safety bead and that the tyre should make a loud pop as it goes onto this bead when it's inflated.

I was certain that the P6 took tubeless tyres, but after talking to him I started to doubt myself. Hence this thread.

Thank you all for the comments. Feel reassured now.

That makes sense. I knew I wasn't dreaming this one!
