P6 with Vitesse wheels, which wheel nuts ?

Had luck to get a set of Vitesse wheels here, a "barn-find" :)
I have seen threads for the right nuts, but as for the different SD1 wheels, I´m not sure, if the nuts displayed here are correct or will centre the Vitesse wheels correctly.
By the way, one hub-cap is missing, does anyone have one ?

Hi.
When I had vitesse wheels on my p6 I had the inner face machined to allow grease cap to fit correctly.
The vitesse nuts had a flat washer on nut and was larger than the nuts shown in your picture.
Do you have 4 or 5 wheels?
If 5 you don't get a cap for the spare.
Can have a look later as I might have a spare cap.
Regards.
Clive.

Hi, take a look at "wheelnut size info for Rover alloys" further down on this page. There you will find out what nuts you need. There are different hole sizes in Vitesse wheels as you will see.
Regards, Barten

Perfect help, guys. Ok, will have a better look next weekend, which size the holes have and how the grease cap fits or does not fit.
"set" was 4 wheels, sometimes I think, where have all the spare wheels gone ?

Don't forget, as Clive says, you will either need to have the wheels machined to enable them to fit over the lip on the grease cap, or do what I did and hacksaw the lip off.

I fitted SD1 grease caps. Then the vitesse hub caps fitted with a little modification on the grease caps.

Life´s not easy....
And in Germany a little bit more difficult. Have some time to do all mods, as I first must have the 1st MOT (car is coming from the Netherlands) with the original wheels/tyres. No chance with Vitesse wheels as they were not common at the P6s official production time. But with the 1st MOT done (at the TÜV, which is looking for historic correct execution), I have a better chance to add them to the car´s papers (only the fist MOT presentation is a monopole gift for the TÜV ).
But, without a forum like this, Madonna, it would have started like a simple wheel change

These kind of rules apply in Switzerland too. I fitted the Series 1 SD1 Alloy which has "Rover" stamped on the rim, nobody noticed or cared as they looked period and original. These are 14" but are 6" instead of 5.5". Mostly however I run the Rostyles.

Don't get me started on the stupid tyre regulations which seem common in Europe. Many people end up running M+S tyres (mud and snow) because these are exempt from regulations but are worse in every way than nearly any alternative, not enough tread for winter and less grip than a good summer tyre. Almost any modern tyre will outperform the original spec anyway, although I have had an indicated 200kph on the autobahn on mine so I guess speed rating is still important.

Still at least old cars can be driven into the center of German cities without restriction or an emissions sticker. None of the rules ever make any sense or seem be consistent to me, in fact they are counterproductive often - this might be a cultural difference between the UK and Europe.

On the plus side I can increase my car's power output by 30% without getting approval or informing my insurer, which is handy when you have a large engine in a low state of tune. I'd imagine it would be impossible with an automatic to verify whether you increased it by 50% or more even.

I looked into fitting the EFi and all they cared about was adding high-pressure fuel hoses on the outside of the car. Go figure....

In Germany insurance and tax for "H" (historic) plated cars is very very low, so I can understand the guys (sometimes...), that they care about original condition. For tyres I do not understand. If the overall running surface is within the limit and tyre and rim do not touch car´s components, so any modification should be ok with a modern tyre (ok, having the correct speed index, which might be expensive, if it´s a V-tyre) and a rim from the original manufacturer. Update is a term, which allows modifications, which could have been done within 10 years after first legalization of your car to the road. Problem, it´s still up to the "inspector" to do it. Yep, not easy. Asked them about modification with the SD1 5-speed. Answer : no way. I told them, the P6 was available with 4 speed and ratio of both 4th speed was the same.
Answer : If you have a 4-speed knob on your gearstick, I do not know, that it´s a 5 speed behind ;)
With the EFI I would have no chance here, so I will try to get out everything what´s possible with the SU carbs and the modified heads.
Ok, have to look for a hacksaw now.

I am pretty sure that a company is working on putting injectors into SU carb bodies the same way that they do for Weber DCOE. It may be worth searching around.

I have recently bought a set of rover vitesse alloys with a spare. Got the 4 sand blasted and now off for a spray. So far I have gathered that I will have to either cut the lip off the grease caps or swap them out with the sd1 caps. Im still not sure on what wheelnuts I will need. Not 100% on using the alloys on my P6, might sell them on.

Hi, Those wheel nuts on that steel wheel are the wrong way round, the taper on the nut goes into the tapered seat in the wheel.

To fit Vitesse alloys you need to either change the studs for SD1's and use SD1 wheel nuts or get different nuts for alloy wheels onto the P6 studs. Either of which can be obtained from here -

I reckon you could be right, but some P6 wheelnuts are tapered both ends.

Hi, It did cross my mind as well, was it the early ones? I know Land Rover had the double taper nut presumably to be soldier or farmer proof. When I was working for my mate he sometimes had his BIL doing work for extra money and he had a habit of doing the same thing, so we got into the habit of checking. I can't pass one now without looking, it's just a quirk I have which comes from then.

When I was at the Main Stealer I had an apprentice, and after I told him to put some wheels back on, I noticed a big shiny ring around the nuts. He'd put them on the wrong way around. Not his fault, I should have told him, but at that point I decided I was better off without the hassle of checking everything he did. It frightened me I might miss one of his mistakes.
