V8 engines never had Bendix starters fitted.
I managed to find an original starter motor from an SD1 and it works fine. I've sent the high torque one back for a refund and this is what they said:
"Received the starter this afternoon. The problem you have is the same as the one we have experienced with a small number of P76’s that have mismatched ring gears and with the standard 9t gear there is far too much backlash between it and the ring gear.
I can say hand on heart we have never had this with a Rover V8 until now and of the several hundred Rover V8 and P76 starters we’ve sold over 25years I’m guessing maybe 10 P76 pinions have had this problem. The fix is to fit a 3mm larger diameter 10t pinion."

P76 uses the six cylinder flywheel for both six AND V8. The Rover version is different. I'll have alook at my starters and flywheels (if I can get to them...) tomorrow and do some measurements.
