Play in Top ball joint

Should there be any play in the top ball joints ( p6. 72 ,2000tc ) with the body supported and the suspension hanging free . With the wheel off I can get hold of the upright and move it up and down. Is this right ? Thanks in advance

There should be no play at all. Play in ball joints will be a fail during a road worthy or registration inspection. You will need to source a replacement to fit asap.

And the tool to extract the old one - this is one the P6club should have and loan out. IIRC getting the new one in isnt too bad, just take care getting aligned correctly before you try to engage the bolts and pull it down. Check the bottom joint as well, be good to do both while its disassembled. And do a wheel alignment afterwards.

I have never used a special tool to remove the top ball joint, just remove the three bolts and tap it upwards (going around the three sides systematically) with a blunt chisel and hammer.

Ajust take care getting aligned correctly before you try to engage the bolts and pull it down.

If you pull the joint into the pillar using the 3 bolts you will either strip the threads on the bolt or in the pillar, or you risk distorting the flange downwards, meaning the joint isn't properly seated.

When I was rebuilding Sparky I tried to undo one of these bolts and the head just fell off. It had obviously been snapped off, and then glued there o_O

I have this problem with the Elegant Thirsty Dinosaur, my 75 3500. Can anyone recommend a source for quality replacements?

Thanks

James
