Pollution Control

As most of you know the imported North American Rover P6 had more pipes than the Highland fusaliers.I am trying to eliminate those I can.The ones that I am unsure about are the lines comming from the top of the valve covers with the flame arrestors. Can these be blocked off?
The crankcase vent I have run down to the lower part of the engine to atmosphere. Most of the others have been blocked. Can anyone shed light on what can be removed and what cant.
Thanks Chris new P6B owner in Calgary

When my flame traps blocked up through not taking them seriously during services, the engine started leaking oil out the front main bearing seal and other areas like the rocker cover gaskets.
Does that answer your question?

When the flame traps on my old 3500S blocked, it started to blow the dipstick out, along with a load of oil which burnt nicely on the manifold

The engine breathers are not part of the emissions control for NADA cars. They are on all cars. The rest of it, if working, should theoretically make your car run better as it is designed to match the air density and therefore oxygen content to the supplied fuel to get perfect burning!!

NADA cars came with a finely tuned AED unit, which is most of your extra pipes. You could take it off but the car would be impossible to start unless warm. Likewise there are many other little changes made which also required additional bits to compensate so just removing some bits, even simple looking stuff, unbalances the rest. The only way to do it successfully is to change the entire carburetter system, with either standard English Su's or new manifold and edelbrock/webber/Holley setup. With the former you can retain the same induction system while the latter will need some work to connect the bonnet scoop to the carby.

This is the long way of saying I agree with Keynsham1...If you really want more grunt or better MPG new exhausts/headers, head porting and/or better cam will give you what you want. The thing with these particular cars is they were very carefully thought out when designed and you can't just simply swap parts for a quick fix you have to think carefully about what you want and how that varies from what they designed. Otherwise it'll be an expensive dead end.
