Power Cut

Well it's like the end of the world here. Currently 22:42 and the power has been off since about 14:00

Wouldn't be so bad, but being easter weekend all the kids are home from uni, and of course without pc's, web or tv they think they're going to die.
I have a mains invertor and a fully charged car battery, so we managed 4 hours of TV before the battery went flat. Luckily I've got a mobile broadband mi-fi box, and a small collection of fully charged laptops, so I'm online  Although I'm down to the last laptop now.

If it had been daytime I would have been tempted to run an extension in from one of the cars and use it as a generator for the invertor, but not at this time of night.

Electric co. says it's going to be off until about midnight, of course as soon as it comes back on all hell will let loose, alarms will go off, all the lights and tv's etc will come on, usual story.

Power cuts, can't say I miss them, a regular occurance growing up, we always had candles in the home. Just in case ha ha
Hope it's all back on for you soon Richard :)

I had 2 momentary power surges last week and it set the burglar alarm off
I found that the rechargeable battery had died , it could produce volts but not under the load of a sidelight bulb

I used to install alarms many years back, so tend to oversize and keep on top of batteries etc. Ours was fine, it was the other 3 in the street that went off at midnight when it came back on. Luckily 2 got turned off pretty quickly, but one did the mandatory 20min ring until it stopped, even with the double glazing shut it was still painfull

Had all the clocks and timers to reset this morning. All good fun.

A couple of years back we had a power cut caused by a dog chasing a raccoon up a utility pole. Raccoon then decided to nibble on the power line. Next stop: bang! Flash! Smoking raccoon!

To be honest I felt sorry for Smokey.

Rechargeable burglar alarm batteries seem to have a finite life - 10 years in my case
Only easy way of seeing if it's still working is to switch off the mains supply
