Rattling instrument binicle

Can anyone advise me? I have a series two obviously with the round clocked dash. When driving the piece of plastic that covers the speedo/rev counter rattles horrendously. If I put the lightest of fingers anywhere on the surface of the plastic panel that covers the speedo rev counter the noise stops instantly. Has anyone any idea what is causing this and how to fix it or is it simply a matter of replacement? Thanks

I think mine has a bit of black foam between the top of the binnacle and the underside of the dash top. I assume it’s original as the car doesn’t look like it’s been apart much. You could also try moving the dash binnacle on its mounting points slightly, see if you can move it away from what it’s rubbing on.

The four flat head screws that hold the plastic cover to the unit have black felt washers on them to stop this. Are yours there?

I lost one of mine and replaced it with a thin slice of rubber hose I had handy, that worked :)

Cheers guys yes all four screws complete with felt rubbers are there, however unlike helpful TOM W, there is no sign of foam on the top or indeed underneath of the binnacle just some black insulation tape on the top of the binnacle. There is also a gap between the top of the binnacle and underneath between the binnacle and the dash mat, which thanks to TOMS tip looks like it is being created by the missing foam. Off to the foam shop!

Mine has the insulation tape too. The gap between the dash top and binnacle is large so the black tape makes it less apparent. It’s a few years since I had the binnacle out of mine, so now I’m doubting what I thought about the foam. I don’t want to give you dud advice. The car’s not kept at home so I can’t just nip out to the garage to check. I do get some resonance from the trim piece that sits to the right of the binnacle. That just clips in place with metal clips into metal slots so might benefit drone something to isolate it. I’ll have a better look next time I’m at the car. I don’t think some foam will harm though.

That grey pipe insulation material, painted black, works well to fill the gap along the top of the binnacle.

I have put a smaller steering wheel on which means I couldn't see the top of the speedo , so I have adjusted the binnacle so it sits directly on top of the rubber mat. This does leave a gap at the top which is very noticeable. I have filled it with some spare door seal, the bit that fits into the channel on the base unit. Fits perfectly and looks as if it should be there :)
