Rear Pads - Change One or Change All?

The near-side outside pad has worn down to the wire, whereas the inside pad still has plenty of meat left. The off-side pads have even more so. My question is, can I replace just the noticeably worn pad (having dropped the half shaft and removed the disk to allow winding in of the piston), or is replacing all of the pads necessary? I would never contemplate doing this with the front pads given their strong bias, but with the rears, I wonder if it is an option?

Thanks for your thoughts!

In such a case i would worry more about the reason that led to such imbalance (sticking caliper pivot?) and rectify this before changing pads. Are the replacement pads exactly the same with ones on the car?

Hi Demetris,

It has been wearing this way since 2007 according to my notes. My Rover has covered 200,000 miles (322,000km) since that time with the pads changed a few times. Everything appears normal but obviously, something is amiss. If I change just the one pad, then I will fit a used pad with rather more meat on it.
