Rear Seat Belt Fitting

Hi

I am going to fit Securon 254 rear belts in GAA12K. Just a quick question, is the parcel shelf pre drilled for these (have found the two bottom mounting threaded holes) - or do I need to do some drilling?

Thanks

Yes.
Run your fingers over the covering and you should be able to feel the circular holes in the hardboard backing. Cut a cross with a sharp blade and push the bolt through.

Actually I lied............or forgot!

I lifted the seat base and centre up - unless i'm going completely mad the hole for the 'stalk' isnt obvious...any ideas?

Ian

Should be there, usually covered with a bit of cloth tape on cars that had no belts installed at the factory.

IIRC, to use the mounts on my parcel shelf, I needed to make a hole in the vinyl parcel shelf covering (like Willy says) and drill a hole through the board that sits under the padded vinyl. Maybe some cars had the board drilled and others didn't? When I did mine, I do seem to remember having to look about for the mounting threaded holes where the lap belt anchor is secured which were very close to the rear doors and were obscured by sound deadening.

Some other things I remember is that some folk use stainless bolts to secure the inertia reels as they perhaps look a bit nicer than the ones Securon provide. Also, the belts tend to drag on the top of the back seat as they are pulled off the inertia reel - so some folk opt for spacers to raise the height of the reel so the belt stays clear of the seat top.

Thanks, found the centre ones, so thats all holes located. I had read that the belts can drag so will experiment with spacers. Good news is inner sills and floor look 100% as well.

Instructions a bit 'light' have two long and one shorter bolt, am assuming shorter one will go on 'stalk mount?

Ian

When you put the long bolt through the near side parcel shelf mounting, .... remove the board inside the boot covering the petrol tank and look at the bolt coming through. If the bolt is too long you'll be putting alot of pressure on the fuel filler hose.

I also made up some metal spacers to go on the back parcel shelf to take up all the slack with the felt/foam/vinyl, it stops the vinyl puckering up when you tighten the bolt.

Original fitted belts had aluminum spacer the thickness of the board/vinyl/insulation pad for the parcel shelf. Though nobody is planning on having a severe wreck with folks belted in the belts, any installation that doesn't have the spacer could fail under the load as the bolt can't be properly tightened. Pretty unlikely, but possible.

Again, thanks everyone.

All fitted, the new Securons come with a decent sized spacer (2.5mm) so once I have re checked all bolts are tightened and secure i'll safety test the belt action - in situ using brute force!

And thanks for the tip re fuel filler, will check tonight.

Ian

Hi Ian,
Once they're fitted, would you mind posting a photo or two and details or where you bought them? It's just occured to me that I'll need to buy a set for my project car.

You'll need more than 2.5mm spacer for the rear parcel shelf. IIRC I made mine up from old spacers removed from a scrapped car's front seat belts and superglued a couple together (so that they don't move when wriggling them round under the vinyl). I think they were half inch or more long.

Hi all,

I've just bought my first P6 today and my first job will be to fit rear belts for the kids.

The seller said that the fittings are all there and from reading this thread it sounds like they are.

Are the securon's the best belts to go for and if anyone's got any pics that would be helpful

Thanks

Simon

Hi simon and welcome. The securon belts are new and straightforward rather than making other belts fit!

We'd love to see some pics of your new purchase over in the new members section :)

Thanks

Rich.

Hello CV35Ian, I am almost certain I have some of the distance pieces in My Rover bits box in the shed. Will have a look first thing tomorrow.
Will give you a shout tomorrow either way. They are about 1 inch long and stepped to fit in the anchorage point on the belt.
FOC. :) Sincerely Moon rover! Keeping on Rovering.

Hi
thanks that would be great, belts in but top mount not tightened yet as steering wheel removal issues have been priority!

I'd give the seller a call to check as theyve left a phone number (you might even be able to buy it cheaper from them outside ebay shock horror ;) ). Securon usually charge more than everybody else for their own products though....
