rear suspension on a Pb6

Hi there,
I am puzzled as to how the de-dion rear suspension arms are lubricated. There is a rubber flexable joint on the drivers side.
The workshop manual shows 2 bungs on the top for filling with oil or grease?
On mine there is nothing at all for filling or lubrication and on the bottom of the arms , a small hole , 10 cent
size that is open to the elements! so how is the arm lubricated?

Peter

Sounds like your bung is missing mate.
Later series DeDion tubes were grease lubricated. My '72 P6b was oil lubed but I stripped it down to clean and then greased it up. No oil in it now .
Go get yourself a bung of some description.[Gaffer tape in the meantime"

I think Peter is referring to the drain holes in the elbows, not the tube. Peter, the ends of the elbows are blanked off from the working bits of the tube.

It sounds like you have a grease lubricated version.

Vern

thank you all for your advice.
So if mine is a greased version , how is it greased, there are no nipples showing, only the 2 drain holes on the bottom of the arms?
Peter

Hi Peter.
Its sealed for life, the only time for greasing would be if you had to remove the tube to replace the sliding gaiter due to splits / damage.
Regards.
Clive.

It is worth checking the gaiter regularly, particularly the top part you can't see as when it breaks the grease can dry out causing the joint to wear and clunk.

Hi Peter,

There are drain holes within each of the elbows, but there should be none open within the trailing arms (lower links). Do you have opens holes within these arms?

Ron.

could be an escape route for gremlins ?

The oil lubed tubes rely on bronze bushes for the slidey bits. So oil is essential. On the grease tube these are replaced by a yeloow mesh of a PTFE loaded nylon. They need only the most minimal amount of grease.
