Replacing dynamo with alternator

Hi is there anyone on here that has replaced the series one dynamo with an alternator and could advise me what type is required.
Thanks
Tony Jenkins.

I'd get a 17/18ACR, and use that along with all the mountings for it as found where it is OE on the later P6's, and modify the wiring to suit.

Isn't there a difference in the crankshaft pulleys between dynamo and alternator 4 cylinders? I think Tony is going to need a ful shopping list! Or even better a scrap late 2000 or 2000 engine to rob the bits off.

Once that's achieved, the wiring is pretty starightforward and we can talk you through that, Tony. Remember when robbing your prey of the mechanical bits needed, that you also need the electrical plugs that go into the back of the alternator!

That comes pretty much as a separate little loom that has two large wires that run from the plug to the starter main lead input terminal*, and the smaller one is for the warning light. IIRC it's the waterpump pulleys that are different (or is that the difference in the waterpumps?), I don't remember the crank pulleys being so, but it is possible.

As Chris said, grabbing the lot from an alternator equipped donor car is the way to go.

*If you've got a pre-engaged starter, if not it will have to be run to the solenoid.

Thanks peeps.I have someone who can wire it up for me as long as I bolt the alternator on myself.Cant see myself finding a scrap P6 engine with an alternator on as they are as rare as rocking horse poo around herebut I shall begin my search forthwith.
Thanks again
Tony Jenkins.

Well, as i have found out lately, yes, at least on series 2 cars there is a different crankshaft pulley, different water pump and pulley, and different engine steady.

However, if you are not being afraid of just modifying your dynamo bracket, you can use your standard pulleys and make the alternator to be aligned properly.
In my opinion it is better than hunting for and replacing all sorts of parts.

Thank you Demetris.I love coming on this forum because you always have a difference of opinion and therefore more choice on how to go about your repair.
Tony Jenkins.
