It is easy to swap out the bearings! Changing Main Bearings

Worth doing as a maintenance thing on these engines. It’s their Achilles heal, the main bearings.

I agree with Steve on this. I changed out mine about 10 years ago, took about 4 hours, following the instructions. I used an old credit card cut to size to help push out the top bearings.

The most inconvenient part is to find out what size bearing you need and buying them. I had been watching on ebay for a while and found a set standard size for a decent price. I might have some OS one in my parts cupboard too if you could use them.

J Radcliffe, thats a great offer and i very much appreciate it. its going to be a wee while before i get to this job though, but once I do, if I may contact you again I would be much obliged.
cheers

As a wee follow up. Regarding the K Seal, as recommended to me by Cobraboy further up this thread. Tipped it in as described, it didn't do anything for the first 100 miles, still losing coolant. However, it seemed the weep gradually slowed down, - I'm a scientist and so can help myself, I was topping up daily and measuring the amount required, then putting it into XL as I love a graph. Two days ago the volume lost had become negligible. And since then has not used so much as a drop now for lots of miles. I can hardly believe it myself, and have no idea of the longevity (bottle says permanent but?) but for once it seems one of the 'miracles in a bottle) works! So thanks very much Cobraboy, I will be raising a glass later this evening to you! Loctite 660, now K Seal...............whatever next, I'll be considering fuel additives at this rate :D

I thought afterward that I should have said to shake the bottle really well, to make sure all of the ‘goodness’ got tipped in.
May your graph flatline from here onward.
