Revealing my 27 year project : 72 3500 s

Today is a great day for me. My Rover 3500s from 1972 has been through the MOT and passed after being off the road since 1986!
It is not without problem I must admit. It stopped during the final stages of the test, but started again after cooling down. It id definetly ignition related and my suspicion goes toward the optic module in the mallory unilite distributor. I have taken it off, let it cool and when installed again all is good. If i then shut off the engine it won't start again before a long cool-down period. Here are some photos:20190410_191543.jpg20190410_191514.jpg20190410_191534.jpg20190410_191543.jpg20190410_191451-min.jpg20190410_191514.jpg
The nodding dog has finally got a home!

Your ignition fault sounds more like the usual petrol vapour lock problems that the P6B in original condition is notorious for.

I have a complete Mallory unit if you need spares. I do not know what model it is, but can go find out if you are interested.

Graeme, the problem is that the spark suddenly dissapears and then the engine shut down. It is the same way like if I shut it off on the key. Cobraboy; my mallory is the unilite with a number 4764301 on top of the box. It also says on the box that it is for buick v8 215- 350 cu inch. What I need is the optic unit called #605. If you happen to have it I am interested.

Today my wife and I had our first proper ride in the Rover after it passed the mot and got a stopping problem. My new mallory 605 optic unit arrived yesterday and I installed it today. This time I made sure to follow the instructions saying to connect the red wire to the coil, and the 12v connector on the opposite side of a ballast resistor. Otherwise they claim the 605 unit can be destroyed over time if the distributor get too high voltage. Now I read 13,8 V on the ignition side and 8,5 V on the coil side. Hopefully this will extend its life.

We had a nice ride to see my brother and his wife. They both liked it! Now a proper tune-up will be required. 20190427_174441.jpg

My monza Rover has had its plates more than a year now. It is good to drive, but I am not happy with the engine. Its got a ticking sound probably coming from the hydraulic lifter or the adjustable rod. I drove 180 km yesterday on the national day, but the ticking is getting very annoying, specially on tickover. My hot cam doesnt help either. It not a nice burble like my other Rover 3500.
I need to do some dismantling in the near future. Only problem is a new project that occupy my workshop.
Is it possible for a new lifter to be faulty an cause this ticking sound? I will try to post a video of the engine sound.
