hey all my top end is starting to rattle slighty so going to replace the cam and all the other bits and bobs also thinking of putting on my spare sd1 heads but i just wanna know are the rocker shafts the same as the p6 and the sd1 or are they a bit different. were is the best place to get the cam, tappets rocker shafts from and what is the best to get

Hello Gareth,

The rocker assemblies for all Rover V8 engines from those in the 3.5 litre P5B right through to the 4.6 HSE Range Rover of 2002 are all the same, so you just ask for a pair for a Rover V8.

Camshaft, rocker assemblies, pushrods, lifters, timing gears and chain. Rimmer Bros and V8 Tuner are just two that have all the parts.

Ron.

thats ok i did think the rocker shafts were the same so thats not a problem another thing i wanna know what is the best cam to get standard or a bigger cam as some people have put in 3.9 efi cams to be honest what would the difference

You can get a kit of all the parts for about 150 quid on eBay... I heard 3.9 cam was good compromise between drivability and performance...

The lift on an OEM 3.9 camshaft is the same as that on an OEM 3.5 camshaft. The difference is in the duration and the profile of the lobes. The 3.9 camshaft will give your Rover better performance at low through to mid range rpm, which is where I expect you spend most of the time. The OEM camshaft in the P6B delivered maximum power at essentially 5200rpm while the 3.9 camshaft will see engine power peak at around 4750rpm.

So you can install either a 3.5 or a 3.9 camshaft without having to worry about the lifter pre load being incorrect, provided of course you fit tin head gaskets under your SD1 heads.

Ron.

P.S : Be careful with Rover V8 parts....there are some parts circulating that are made in China and the best place for them is in the bin. Cheap parts are more often exactly that!

You'd be able to use most if it. Says oe lifters which I believe are usually the problematic part in cheap kits....

Hi Gareth

Maybe the difference you are thinking of between P5/P6 and SD1 is the difference in rocker cover and splash guards (fiited to P5/P6 and not to SD1)?

Chris

well the miles on the engine is only 38k but i have replace the bottom end but the engine was sorted for about 10 years but the rockers went missing so took them off my last engine so dont know what millage they have done so wanna replace them but the tappets are making a noise so want to replace them so might as well replace the cam at the same time and at least i can say i have replace that as well

Sounds like a plan! New lifters should always go with a new camshaft so you may as well do the lot. Seeing the engine has very little mileage, once the top end has been done and provided you shower your engine with lots of regular oil and filter changes, 200,000 miles should clock by before you need to do anything again.

Ron.

yea well i put new bearing at the bottom so at least i know all that has been done i did know i would have to do the top end at some point but that last kit should be ok at least when i get that part all i got to get is the rocker shaft and the rods i think

Hello Gareth,

Why did you need to change the crankshaft bearings on an engine with so little miles? Had something happened to cause them damage?

Ron.

i only change them as the engine was laid up for 10 years so i thought best to replace them thats the only reason
