hi mate i have put it all back it did try to fire up after i put it on ep mark and it ran for a short time ive put the firing order as 1342 but it wouldnt even atempet to fire
i have moved the leads around one at a time and it coughs and splutters but now i have discovered that i am getting petrol on top off the pistons could this have something to do with the gear cog at the bottom off the distributer or someting to do with the shim as i had to take both out when i put the piton rings in i apresate any help

Do you mean the shims that set the valve clearances? If you've mixed those up then you're going to have to check and reset all the clearances correctly.

hi thank you would that be the cause off petrol on top o the pitons and what is the easyist way of checking valve clearance as i said engines are not my strongest point cheers john thanx for all your help

I'm not sure of the cause of petrol on the top of the pistons. I'd advise getting all the settings correct so the engine will run, then see what happens.

To check the valve clearances, make sure the engine is stone cold, remove the cam cover, then turn the engine over by hand and use feeler gauges between the heel of the cam and the bucket on top of the valve stem to get the clearances. If they need resetting then things get a whole lot more complicated.

Petrol on top of the pistons could just be where the ignition is off. Effectively flooding the engine.

hi i just noticed your anwer im getting about thimble full and it is wetting up the spark plugs when i take the spark plugs out and clean them and drain the fuel with a seringe she will start for a few second but then i have to repete the prosess this has all started since i put new piston rings in she used to run i been using her about year

Some questions:

1. You've had the head off and replaced the piston rings?

If the answer to 1 is yes, then

2. Are you sure you got the camshaft timing correct when you put the head back on?
3. Did you adjust any of the valve clearances and/or are you sure you have the right shims on each valve?
4. The distributor gear can be assembled so that you can't get the "normal" position of the distributor, but that should be fixable by rotating the distributor body and moving the spark plug leads around the cap. Is that what you mean by "I've moved the leads around"?

hi thanx or your message what i done was i drove her into the garage i unbolted the head put the timeing on to top dead center without pegging the cam shaft in i then unbolted thead took the cam out then the cups 1 by 1 wth the shims that where there and placed in a line on the bench
i then went on to replacing the piston rings then put engine back in the car then i put the head on with a new head gaskt with new o ring then put the cam carrier back on then i put the cam cups with the shims back in the order i took them off then put cam back on and talked the lot down then put cam wheel back on then i did top dead center on the fly wheel then 1342 firing order another gentelman on here told me cam timing was out i done that today she coughed and spluttered then reved up and died i took the spark plugs out and they where wet and smell of fule i put a torch down he whole and can see liqued on top of the piston on numder 4 i managed to serange out a thimble of fule ive never come a cross this problem with engine before so any help would be most apprated as im more body work than engine cheers john

OK, it doesn't sound like you've got a valve clearance problem. Can you fit the locking pin to the flywheel at EP and get the locking piece on the camshaft to fit in? If you can't do that it's something that needs to be fixed. If it runs a bit it must be close though.

Upper chain tensioner is in place and not retracted?
