Rough running

Hi all. Bit new to Rovers, twin carbs....!

I have a 1973 V8 Auto which I've owned since August. It's now starting to play up, very sluggish on take off, needs loads of choke but after ten mins and a bit of throttle its ok for half an hour, then the oil light blinks, the engine coughs a bit. Yesterday I had to limp home after a trip out as it just wanted to conk out choke or no choke and would not idle at standstill at all, when it conked out I had to wait half an hour for it to start again. I'm guessing this is a carb/fuel prob, although I'm completely unfamiliar with the carb set up or which carbs it has? I gather there are tw types used on these cars? The manual is about as clear as mud.....

Hi Steve,

There are 2 types of carb it could be. The HS6 which has a little float chamber on the side which is fed by the fuel pipes. It also has a nut on the bottom which surrounds the jet which you use to adjust the mixture.

. THe other other sort is the HIF type which has an integral float and has a screw on the side for mixture adjustment.

Are you running points still? as you have to adjust those dizzies (dwell?) to keep them running as the points wear so it may just need a bit of playing with. The points and condenser may of course need replacing too as they are a service item. (personally i prefer electronic ignition - fit and forget!)

If it's never quite run right I'd look at the timing too and then setting the mixture. No need to do anything with timing lights etc. Just Get it running at temperature, and twist the dizzy till its running at max revs. Then move the dizzy clockwise until the revs drop just a little and it should be bob on for the timing.

For the mixture when its at running temperature you adjust the idle screws so it runs evenly between both sides then you need to richen/lean the mixture for each carb so revs are as high as they can be without the engine dying when you use the throttle.

Any other pointers?

Hi, not had a moment to play with carbs, ran well yesterday but today almost impossible to get going. A mate has suggested carb icing? Certainly cold here today and the last time it refused to
.

Hi Steve,

When the carburettors are in need of a rebuild (new seal kit), then swinging between normal, extremely lean and extremely rich is part of the course.

Ron.
