Rover P6 V8 mechanical fuel pump

Hello all!

I am on the Facebook P6 page and thought you guys here could help me.
I have a P6 V8, 1971 that I bought here in Portugal.
The car had half the engine missing, so I went through the process of buying the rest and putting it together.
I have managed to get it started and it idles once warmed but I am having trouble starting it (won't start unless I spray fuel directly into carbs for about a minute).

I am however sidetracking!
I am looking for a mechanical fuel pump (attached to timing cover). Could anyone help me? I would get the repair kit, but parts of the pump were cracked (car has been stood for 30 years!)
Any help appreciated!
Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy.
Welcome.
If you cant find a good or new mechanical pump, then blank off the hole and fit an electric one! :)
That should also help eliminate any possible vapour lock you might get if it get a bit warm on long trips or in traffic!

Hi,

I have actually bought an electrical facet fuel pump, but I have done a head rebuild on a 83 BMW, I've rebuilt half the V8 engine but I just don't get the wiring of the pump! Black earth wire, easy. Red wire is where it goes wrong. They talk about adding a relay to it, connecting one to the ignition wire (how do you know which wires are which?).
Bit dumb when it comes to this part!.....

Hi, you don't really need to fit a relay. I expect you have been told this by people used
to injection systems where it is common for various reasons I won't go into as it will
confuse. Take a feed off one of the white wires on the back of the ignition switch and
run it to the red wire on the pump, and as you say connect the black wire to earth.

Hope this helps!

Colin
