Hi I'm new to the site can anyone help please,
I have a rover p6 2000tc 1967 that won't start its trying to a bit.
I've put new points in but I struggle with the setting and timing got told have the number 1 at tdc and the book say have number 4 at tdc ?? Do i have it just as the piston is on its way back down or on the top of its run or dead on TDC?
Witch one is number 1 cylinder is it the closest one to the radiator ?
Witch ht lead on the distributor cap is number 1 234 ect.
Has or does anyone have a photo of the engine wireing because when I got it it was bear Iv put the engine and gear box in and wondering if I haven't wired it right IE coil has 4 spades i only put 2 wires on it.
It's driving me mad can you help .

Number one is closest to the radiator. Number four will be at TDC when number one is. You need to find which cylinder is on the compression stroke, the rotor arm should be pointing to the plug lead for that cylinder at TDC, the other leads should be in the order 3-4-2 anticlockwise. Regarding the coil, if your car is positive earth then the lead from the + terminal should go to the contact breaker and the other connection, which should have two leads on it, to the -.

The way the the HT leads are supposed to be wired is the distributor position closest to the front of the car, Should go to cylinder number 1, the closest cylinder to the front of the
However if the motor has ever been apart, it is very possible that things are set up difference. The most common way I have found it set up (wrong) is the distibutor position at the front, does to cylinder number 4. Things can be set differently, and the car made to run. So it is a good idea to take a photo before taking off the leads.
