Series 2 2000SC 'Strip' Speedo Problems

That’s the shape I have always wanted what a lovely example Chris.
The table and chairs are great as well if only I had the space :p

Hi Eddy you could use one of them
or an old Road Angel there on fleaBay
the old second hand units go cheap and give you a good read out.

My NADA 2000 SC Auto speedometer went out suddenly with a screeching sound. I have read many of the forum discussions regarding this topic and believe I need to start with replacing the cable although I fear trying to get my hamfists into tight spaces. I am not able to find a LH auto version anywhere online. I am in the USA. Are the cables universal or spec'd to specific models? The fittings all look much the same so I wonder what the difference is and if a generic auto parts store version would work. I have ordered a Rover auto RH version on ebay and was advised it could work with some clever routing. Is this correct? Thanks

There are four things that could be wrong, the speedo itself, the right angle drives at each end of the cable and the cable itself. Personally, my money would be on the right angle drive behind the speedo as the first suspect. If you remove the driver side glove box, you can easily detach the cable from the speedo. Do that, arrange it so you can see the end and then drive the car around the block and see if the cable core turns as you go. That will identify if the problem is the speedo/upper right angle drive or the cable/lower right angle drive.

When you look at your right angle drive, the wheel is held in by a disc pressed into the back and staked. The disk can work its way out and become loose which causes the grease to dry and the wheel to move back and forth, causing the speedo to read the same. Eventually both disc and wheel part company from the case. so check the disk is firmly held in place and not loose. A Couple of drops of sewing machine oil on the other end will have it working better. If the disc is loose push it in and glue into place; making sure the thing still turns of course.

Thanks for the good advice Mike. I will be on the lookout for the failed disc, might explain why the speedo failed so suddenly. Appreciate you sharing your expertise with me.
Regards,
Jeff
