Starting the transition

Now the years ahead are fewer than the ones Ive left behind , wife and I are looking to settle in a more supportive environment after 45yrs of farm life .. A big decision .
We have looked around various places we thought we would like to live in our later years - Oz , an island in our gulf and all sorts of crannies around NZ .
It looks like it may be Devonport on the north shore of Auckland city .
This area has it all : beaches , parks , cafes , no traffic , a gaggle of classic cars/owners and friendly natives .
As a trial we have taken over an apartment in this old power station . Bit different to the farm , and after 1 month Im actually enjoying the move .
The farm is only a 45min commute to shift stock crank up the chainsaw and drop the odd tree .
Ive kept my options open and can always go back to plan "b" if it doesn't work out .
Old Yella actually enjoys the cafe life and her new garage .
I reckon I could get 20 odd P6 in behind that opening !!

Very nice spot Gerald. My Mother has lived in Devonport for the last 15 years or so and loves it. She runs the Devonport folk music club with her partner in the concrete bunker buried in the top of Mt Victoria. It's a cute and friendly little town. The only problem is if you have to leave. Lake rd can be a nightmare at rush hours or on a sunny weekend but there's always the ferry.

Best of luck to you. Are you allowed to actually keep something in that garage area?

Hi Oldbloke - yep , a very large area for old yella to wallow in , but as the other inhabitants in the building also use that area for their cars - I will be pushing my luck to get more than my limit of two vehicles . In leu of mechanicing I'll have to take up singing as Al's mum has classes behind this place .

Yo Al , have already spotted that music club in my meandering . I may pay her a visit and get some dirt on you and post it here .
Ive got that Lake Rd jam-up covered , I won't travel at that time . Rover would love to boil over on that one . I could always remove the thermostat .

Dirt? What dirt? I've already confessed to owning a Lada once haven't I?
The club is a really interesting spot, can't be many held in 100 yr old military bunkers with a great history and one of the best views in Auckland. It is a folk club so sometimes it's great and sometimes it's absolutely dire but if you do happen to go, Mum will be the one on the door taking your money. (Her name's Hilary.) Say hi from me!

Will do Al
For those that are following this blog . Devonport in Auckland has two ancient dormant volcanic cones [ I hope they are sleeping ] ,
During the war the navy took charge and planted massif gun emplacements into the mountains to blow anything naughty approaching by sea , out of the harbour .
Back in those days the bad guys played by the rules and didnt invade a country through the back door but came straight down the throat of a heavily armed harbour .
The gun emplacements and vast tunnels linking all the guns , remain . A hostile shot never fired . A sort of macabre tourist attraction . Kids have more fun sliding down the hillside on cardboard sheets while MnD think about how bad things could have been while climbing through the bunkers .
Im happy the coffee is very good and "old yella " enjoys the slow respectful drivers that inhabit this place .
