Starting up after Engine and BW35 Rebuild

Hello

So I am getting closer to the power plant rebirth but now I am coming to the question of how to do it without knackering it back up again. Right now, I have the following in mind so please can my errors be corrected or any suggestions welcome. Both the engine and trans were removed and rebuilt.

1. Add engine oil with additive etc
2. Vaseline / long screwdriver drill combo into oil pump to thoroughly get oil around the parts, including rotating crank 180 deg by hand and repeating. Paying attention to having the drill going round the right way.
3. Add (say) 5 quarts of trans fluid
4. Remove spark plugs and rotate on starter for (say) 30 seconds. Check trans fuel level (from under the car - a pain). Refill. Filling the torque converter back up.
5. Repeat (4) above by (X) number of times and / or use (Y) time instead until (Z) amount of fluid has been put in ??????
5. Put plugs back in and start engine. Now follow camshaft break in procedure (specific RPMs)
6. Top up trans fluid?
7. Change engine oil when done

My main curiosity about this is running the cam break in period and whether the BW35 is even filled with fluid at this point. Or should the break in be interrupted to check trans fluid level and refill?

Thanks
Adrian

This came up on a search, look at #4
BW35 oil capacity.
The rest of your list looks sensible. In order to have an uninterrupted cam break in I positioned two large household fans in front of the radiator, this kept the engine temps stable.

Yes, I read that elsewhere while researching the topic in general - which I quickly realized I had to do! I decided to make the process extra spicy by rebuilding the AED instead of the sensible option of adding a manual choke. I guess if it does not start up straight away - ish, I should rethink the enrichment strategy before I do too much damage?

By the way, I ordered a Powerspark distributor from Simonbbc which was the final item in the recipe (I was mulling over the 123ignition system but in the end could not really justify the extra price for a stock engine). I ordered it on Sunday and it arrived in San Diego Weds lunch time. How is that possible! Happy camper on that front.

You won't get 10 quarts of fluid into a dry BW35 without running the engine. If you are filling from empty try to get a gallon in, (UK gallon) and have another 6 pints onhand to add once the engine starts, but if you have to break the cam in, and get the coolant topped up, as well as adding the trans fluid, you're going to have your hands full, so just add a pint at a time as you have the chance, until you have a couple of pints left, then add those when you set the level properly.

Thanks - that sounds manageable, with a trained assistant. Fortunately I will have one of those and in this case the monkey will know a lot more about this than the organ grinder......the AED wild card is my biggest worry!
