Hi there,
my p6 has a strange clacking, thumping noise from the left hand side of the car.
When driving its difficult to determine exactly if it is front or back, but I'm leaning to the rear of the car, but.....
I have the car up on the hoist and inspected the shockers , which are a pretty bright yellow, made in Japan, and look to be new. The one on the front passenger side , top bush is torn and I wonder if that might be making the noise? I dont know where I would buy a new single bush? I have inspected the underside of the car and the exhaust system is partially new and not rubbing or banging on anything, also the rear gearbox mount is new too so Im not sure as to where I should look for this noise.
When I bought the car it had the noise and the seller said that it was something loose in the rear p/s door, but I have renewed the window lifer and replaced the window felts and nothing was found amiss inside the door.

The top bushes are the same as the bottom. Each shock has four bushes, all the usual suppliers keep them.

thanks Harvey for the info,
I will remove the shocker and bush and take with me to find the correct size bush..today...

mine is fitted vertically, how is this possible?
Peter
If the bush is compressed correctly, another hole, horizontal this time will be revealed further in. The outer vertical hole only purpose is to enable you to compress enough the bush in order to be able to fit the split pin through the inner hole. It will be obvious when you will remove the bush.

I almost guarantee that the split pin being in the wrong hole is the source of your noise. Found the same on my car when I got it.

The outer hole is for the pivot pin of the proper Rover tool 600530 for installing the bushing. The tool is also used for the bushings of the stabilizer bar connecting the diff carrier plate to the base unit. And I'm with SD, almost certainly the source of the noise.

hi there,
I fitted new bushes, but had to cut them down to get the split pin in the horizontal hole.
The new bushes are the same size as the old ones, it as impossible to compress and engage the hole without reducing in size.
The old ones had 2 extra washers to take up the slack to fit the outside hole.
Have I done the wrong thing , making room for a failure in the future?
The noise is still there , but not as much, so I must have been on the right track!

I get a strange noise on the passenger side too. Ive isolated it down to when I take Mrs Miller . My noise is easily fixed . Go faster.

is this a tool that I cold make, what does it look like?
Peter

I found this in my workshop manuals, at the back is a list of all the special tools for the P6 and this is what I found.

rovep6frontchocker bush tool-crop.jpg click the picture for full size.

now to make one ....

There is no need to use the Rover tool. Just insert a screwdriver to the outer hole, and use an open end spanner against it, in order to lever the washer enough to fit the split pin through the correct hole. It's harder to describe it than actually do it.

Thats the complete lesson in one !! Doesnt get any simpler. In fact it was so simple - I forgot how I did it. Someone give Demetris some cake.
