Sump Plug Sealant

Hello all,

I've just drained the oil out of my 3500, and with it (as well as draped around the sump plug) was the remnants of silicone type sealant - presumably the last time this was done (mechanics at last year's service) they put a daub around the plug when they put it back to prevent leaks. It was always nice and non-drippy from the sump so is this a good idea now, and if so what gunk would people recommend. Or if not then I'll just put it back on nice and tight.

Also, the filter which came off was a Fram PH8A rather than the (shorter) PH25 - presumably the smaller capacity of the 25 filter is ok as long as I keep the oil changes regular.

Thanks in advance

Joe

Don't need one. If I did I might be inclined to use something like a high temperature silicone/PTFE o-ring or fibre washer instead. That way, there's no chance of anything gunky ending up back in the sump.

I use a domestic fibre washer on the radiator plug and it works a treat.

I give everything a good clean and use a copper washer - and change it every time the sump plug is removed. I keep a handful in stock just so that I am not tempted to reuse one.

there are washers that incorporate rubber seal. used by plumbers. sadly cannot recall nam of this type .they come in different sizes so may be ideal for anti leaks .ie: replace copper washer? if I find out later will repost with trade name for them . though why manufacturers simply didn't cut a grove in sump plugs and fit an O ring is beyond me. maybe when designed way back in 60's .rubber 'O' ring hadn't been invented .

I used to be paranoid, I used to think everyone and everything was out to get me, but I'm not anymore, now I know everyone and everything is out to get me......

I thought a Paranoid was a semi robotic parrot

Getting back to the thread though, I just clean up the copper washer and the plug and put it back. Never had a leak from there

I had a mark 2 Daimler/jag years ago , and all the brake bolts were wired, front and back, no chance of ever working loose...

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies, it's all fresh and back together now. Had a slight problem with the filter though, Fram's PF25 had a much larger thread, not sure where i got the idea that was the correct one from (Fram website) so i went for a straight replacement with the PF8A, or Mann equivalent.

Cheers

Joe

Hi, The PF25 filter has a 13/16" thread as used on the earlier engines. The PF8A one has 3/4" thread as used on the later ones in the SD1 onwards. So it would seem someone has changed the pump cover or maybe even the timing cover to get the bigger oil pump, The 3/4" thread is a lot more common and used widely on a variety of different engines so factors stock them in a variety of filter sizes and are more inclined to offer deals on bulk purchases (in packs of 10) if that's of interest.
