suspect SU fuel pump.

Hello, i am back to annoy you good folks for expert information. my problem at the moment seems to be fuel starvation, the motor runs perfectly for many miles then it starts to splutter and comes good again. when doing some basic tests all seems ok. i will attach another pump that i have on a different circuit and switch so if this happens again i can activate the other one and that might show the problem. now can i attach this second pump in the line to go through the SU pump or will i have put two T pieces in one for and aft the suspect pump. thank you in anticipation for your guidance. best regards and stay safe.

Have you checked the filter in the existing pump to check if its clear. Theoretically you could connect the two pumps in series as each would just act as a none return valve and allow flow which ever was activated. That would check electrically if they work correctly but wouldn't reveal if one were restricted in some way . Burlen show the pump characteristics & fault finding Technical - SU Carburetters

When I was young we had a P3 which also got vapour lock symptoms in summer. Seeing as the fuel tank has a large flat bottom exposed to road heat, my dad painted the bottom silver to try to reduce the heat take up, seemed to help some . Another time when the pump failed at night we got home with mum driving, dad sitting half on the mudguard, facing backwards, with the bonnet side removed, operating the pump action by hand....bit scary.
