Swivel pillar- replacement bottom ball joint drops in!

Evening all,

Just replacing the bottom joints on my 3500s, got them out OK yesterday, but this evening when we went to press the second one in it just dropped in! And I mean under the force of gravity alone. Has anyone else experienced this? Unfortunately cannot compare this joint to the other as it has already been pressed home.

Does anyone have a spare drivers side swivel pillar they are willing to sell?

Or, maybe as a first step, does anyone have a swivel pillar kicking (joint free)about that they can measure the diameter of the hole on, or a new joint that they could measure so I can compare to what I have here? The new joint has an OD of 47.2mm.

Car is a 1973 3500s if this makes any difference.

Thanks all.

I seem to remember someone mentioning that some replacement ball joints have been known to be wrong too... (Belgian manufactured iirc...?)

Hi, I've just been out to the workshop to check my two new spares. One is a QH joint
but that is sealed up in a plastic tub and I'm reluctant to open it, the other is stamped
AP on the rear face and the measurement of that is 47.8mm.

Hope this helps.

Like Colin, I too have a sealed QH part, but since I am going to use it soon I opened it and it measured 47.9mm

Thanks guys - that is very much appreciated! The replacement joint definitely seems to be around half a millimetre smaller then. That is a fair difference...

Watch this space, i'll let you know the outcome.

Much appreciated!
