Thermostat bypass

Dear all,
While replacing the thermostat on my 1975 2200TC, I discovered that on the bypass there is a metal plate with a small vertical "hole" or slit (pic 24)
However on the cylinder block (pic 23) and on the bypass part (pic 25) this slot is horizontal and much larger. Is this normal?
Or do I have the wrong "metal plate"?
Best greetings from Luxembourg

Ok. Thank you for the info. But what is it good for to have a small vertical slit and 2 large horizontal slits?

Hi, So it produces a small hole for a bypass which doesn't need to be large otherwise the water would go through there rather than the thermostat. In fact the thermostat does more than control the temperature it regulates the flow of water round the system and can help cooling.
