Tight Transmission Dip Stick on a S1 P6 3500

Hello everyone

Was checking the oils on my S1 3500 this morning, i went to check the transmission fluid and discovered that the dipstick is really tight, i couldnt get in back in the second time so ive put a rag and elastic band over the tube for now thinking it was off another car.... then i looked the owners manuals and realised it is the correct dipstick.
Is this tightness normal?
Im worried i make break it in the tube

Any help would be appreciated

thanks
James

Hi James the dipsticks have to go through a bend on the way into the gearbox so you may find it useful to turn the dipstick on the way in there should be no need to force it. Also check for sharp edges on the end of the dipstick as this will catch on the metal tube on the way in. Stephen

well, im still having trouble with it. filed any sharp edges off the stick and looked down the tube with a light, can only see so far down the tube no blocks in the upright bit. Is this something that can be taken off?
regards
James

As Rockdemon says, if it hasn't got a rubber bung on the dipstick, (About 1" long, same diameter as the tube, and fitted directly under the top) then that will most likely be the problem. They come loose, and then work themselves down the tube.

You might be lucky and be able to hook the bung back out of the top of the tube if that is the problem, if not removing the tube would enable you to try hooking it out of the bottom, if not it's a replacement dipstick and tube.

Thanks for you're help again with this Harvey P6
Im guessing i will loose fluid if i take the tube off so may leave it until i can afford to service the engine and gearbox properly, I will see if i can get anything out with a hook for now.

Thanks again

You won't lose fluid removing the dipstick tube because it goes into the casing above the fluid level, but is is awkward to get at.
The only exception to that would be if the converter has drained back into the box, but if you run the engine for 10 seconds or so before starting the job that will solve that particular problem.

Thanks again, i will have a look at this at some point as im wanting to get underneath just full of cold at the moment. hoping to get it done at some point so i can get a proper fluid reading.

Cheers
James
