Transmission cooler suggestions.

Hi Guru's,
Soon on the list of reliability upgrades is a separate transmission cooler. Does anyone have advice on type/size/location?
Cheers!
Rob.

Hi Rob,

I have been running a dedicated transmission oil cooler since 2009, and very happy I am with that decision. The cooler within the radiator has been disabled so plays no part in the cooling operation. The unit that I fitted is a PWR 30 row plate and fin design. I also run a Magnefine transmission fluid filter before the cooler. The smaller cooler that you can see in front is a Mocal 13 row engine oil cooler.

My 928 has 2 intercoolers, 1 in each radiator side tank - engine oil in one, auto trans oil in the other. The down side of this arrangement is that if the auto trans cooler leaks and water gets into the tranny its done for - apparently the clutch facings are fixed with water soluble glue! Such failures are not unheard of, so quite a few 928 owners fit separate tranny coolers. Sounds like Ron drives somewhat more vigorously than the average Rover driver, which is good to hear.
Ron, How did you plumb the cooler into the pump ?

Hi JP,

I use an adapter plate which is attached to the oil pump front cover. The oil filter then screws to the plate.

Thanks, pics are very helpful. Ever thought of closing the gap between the radiator and cross member, to stop hot air recirculating back to the front? 928s have a shield there between rad and front of engine, and it makes a noticeable difference in cooling in hot slow traffic.
