Tuning engine

Today I thought I would see if I could tune the engine and sort out the carburetor linkage, the choke did not seem to go fully back into position after use and turned out to have part of the linkage bent. Next I had a go at tuning it and after setting the timing at 8 dbtdc as that gave the smoothest running I then messed with the carb and it appears to be a little smoother on a test run and fires up straight away so hopefully it should be easier to start in the mornings.
Only problem I've got is when I put the pipe on the connection in the following photo it restricts air flow and stalls so left it off temporarily bt don't want to eave it like that as I'm assuming it should be drawing air via the filter.

You have to tune the carb with the open pipe on the left of the pic joined to the flame trap pipe, and the open pipe on the air filter connected to the engine breather on the top of the cam cover.

The two connections were joined together with a short piece of pipe, so I assume this was wrong?

So looking at photos one pipe from oil filler cap to connection on side of air filter housing and the other should come up from bottom of engine to connector on carb

Well, it's the engine breather, (the filler cap is at the front), but a hose goes from there to the one on the air filter, and the one on the carb goes to the flame trap, and then continues on to a stub on an ally plug on the front of the engine, so you have it pretty much correct.

I'm thinking that the pipe with the flame trap is a pipe I noticed hanging down under the car and I forgot to look at it after doing the carb.
Looks like I've got another job to add to the list lol.
Thanks for all the info

It’s very hard to adjust the carb mixture nut with that silly air filter in the way I found.
I was thinking about fitting the pan cake air filters what do you guys think are they any good?

I had to set with out filter as when I bought the car a few weeks ago it did not have one and I ordered one and it was the wrong size when arrived.
I was thinking of a pan filter as I had one on my landy with no problems.
