upgraded pads/ sticking calliper

I am thinking of replacing my front n/s calliper with a recon one as I'm tired of it sticking and freeing it up to have it stick again. Today its stuck and really pulling the car to one side. My question is can I get away with replacing just one calliper, or will the recon one show up any short-comings in the working o/s one?

As to pads, any suggestions for up-graded pads?

I'm also thinking of fitting stainless braided brake hoses, are these worth the money?

Thanks in advance

You can certainly "get away" with just fixing the sticky one, but do take a look at the other side anyway just to be sure there's no weeping.

Sooner or later it's going to need the seals doing at the very least, but swapping a dodgy caliper out on the other side probably won't make it fail any quicker or last any longer

Well this is a "how much do you want to spend" question! I can't remember whether you have a 4 pot or V8. If 4 pot then the most effective upgrade is simply to fit V8 brakes! Easiest way to achieve that is to swap the uprights complete with brakes hubs etc. You are likely to find the pedal a little firm with V8 brakes and a 4 pot servo, but personally I think I might prefer that.

If V8 then the only pad upgrade availble readily these days is to EBC GreenStuff pads. These are Kevlar based and fairly soft but with excellent fade resistance. Unfortunately Kevlar pads gas heavily when working and to make them work properly you need to have a means of getting the gas out from under the pad - otherwise it floats on the disc. For a solid disc P6 that means grooves, there are discs sold with drillings but they have no effect on a solid disc other than to introduce fracture sites! If you were to fit one of Alan Ramsbottoms (Classe Parts) vented disc conversions he could supply those with either drillings or grooves (or both!). I can vouch that the braking performance with vented discs, grooves and GreenStuff pads is absolutely stunning!

Whatever route you chose I would suggest it was wise to do both calipers!
