Use of Axle Stands

Hi,
IF your jacking points are still in good condition, the correct way is to place suitable round metal bars in the jacking tubes & rest these on axle stands. If your sills are a little suspect, you will need to locate suspension points under the front of the car & use blocks at the rear.
You can jack the car up using a trolley jack placed under the front cross member & also the rectangular block at the rear under the bumper. In the first case above, you can use the jack supplied with the car (it is made to fit the jacking tubes
).
Obviously, in either case, you must have secondary supports (large blocks of wood are great) in case of failure or slipping of the stands

I use trolley jack under front engine crossmember ..make sure it is well located as handbrake off as it can slip if not careful! then axle stands under crossmember each side where it meets lower control arm bush area ( very strong point and stable) .for rear I use trolley again on the 'box' section under rear valance/bumper. though I find when at full jack height suspension is too low for me so I put smaller axle stands under each side under strong section of suspension arm near pivot point (under rear door section) then lower and take another bite on jack under each suspension 'arm' spring section. being careful to not unbalance car . raising each side in turn I get it high enough to use a lay on wheeled mechanics trolley under car! also gives much better access to all part underside. just be careful and ensure weight is secure as these are REALLY heavy cars and not unknown for body parts or whole body to get crushed if not fully secure and supported. needless to say I have 4 car jacking points provided by Rover and these are in visual perfect condition I simply do not use them! yes I have has outer sills off to inspect etc .
