V8 front suspension bottom stabiliser arms

Hi.

Does anyone know where i can get a N/S and O/S front suspension bottom stabiliser arm for my S2 V8 auto (they have a ball joint at one end and a bush at the other). The ball joints on mine are well past it, which would probably account for the odd knock and wander when on the road. Can anyone help me in tracking some down?
I am told that they are handed, hence one for each side.

Second hand ones will do as long as the ball joints are ok - i can always replace the bushes.

Thank you
Glen.

Last time I came across these from Wadhams, they were actually 4 cylinder rods (which are longer because of the narrower spacing of the chassis rails) cut to length and rewelded with a sleeve over the cut. The angle between the axis of the bush and the axis of the swivel joint wasn't very accurate.... So probably best to see what he is actually offering first.

The clue there is that these items are basically unobtainium. At one stage I had tracked down a company that would replace the swivel joint in an existing arm - but they've now dissapeared from the net, so I imagine they have shut down.

Does anybody else know of any firms that can do this sort of thing?

Chris

Our P6 wiz in Cape Town overhauls those joints - but only those from S1 cars, saying it's a straightforward kind of job whereby the squashed tabs (" ") are bent back and the sleeve unscrews from below releasing the joint. Later ones have a sealed underside and thus can't be removed without breaking. Would this difference in design apply to UK cars as well (maybe they're what Chris is referring to)? I can post photos if needed, as he gave me a pair for posterity and yes they did go in the suitcase 8)

hi tor,
that is correct. series ones have a brass bottom that can be removed and therefore reconditioned. series two's are a sealed unit.

I would try Amsteer.
They manufacture these joints, and have rebuilt many obsolete types of joint for me in the past, but not the P6 links I must confess.

Can you post a pic?
Are these the bottom forged links?
IIRC, I replaced these and they weren't that expensive.
Hard to get off the vehicle though!

Hi,

Cant take a pic at the mo. The bottom stabiliser link has a ball joint at one end and a spherical bush at the other.
Glen.

Thats the one.
Had no trouble sourcing it and a very reasonable cost.
Problem is I don't remember where I got it from.
Will have a think and get back to you.

Is this the assembly my old Parts Catalogue calls "Steering Track Rod Assembly" ?

I would think that would be the rod for adjusting the FWA. I think it's called a "Bottom Link Strut"

hi,
amsteer do not make these. i approached them while i was running rover classics to have them re-made. i told them they were handed, which makes them offset and they would re-make them but make them straight, which would do both sides and cut there costs down. i said rover designed them offset for a reason. doing them straight would put extra pressure on the ball joint end and prematurely wear them out. they said no, so i declined having them done.

Cant remember for the life of me where i got these...thought it was Scotts, but they dont have them.
I checked my photos... definitely renewed them.

Edit...Actually, i tell a fib...I believe they were punched out and cleaned up and then had new boots/grease applied to them  ...not full renewal

I know that J.R Wadhams can supply boots for the steering rods etc.

I keep all the receipts in a folder so I can check back whenever necessary...

Ron.

I keep my receipts in a plastic tub. Unfortunately there are a lot of them...!

Apparently there is a guy here in Melbourne that can rebuild flogged out ball joints and he is near tvr_al and myself. The mazda guys have used him for worn out tie rod ends that are NLA.
If I can track him down, I'll put his details up here.

I can no longer bear to keep receipts...
When I sell the car, the next owner will have to take my word...or look at my photos. :)

I was thinking more about someone getting old units reconditioned, and then perhaps selling them on an exchange basis.
It seems pointless to go to the expense of having the entire link re-made, when 90% of it does not wear and can be re-used.
With a new Metalastik bush and a new ball joint, the link would be as good as new.
I know Amsteer do this reconditioning work because they have done several obsolete joints for me, but not specifically the P6 links as I said before, but I see no reason why they could not do them.
