V8 Mechanical Fuel Pump

Hi all,
Occie, my V8, has developed the habit of taking ages to start on the key when the car's been standing for a day or more. Once started, restarts are fine. I'm thinking it's likely to be a problem with the non-return valves in the mechanical fuel pump leaking down, but I can't just buy a rebuild kit as I know my pump has the seemingly-unobtainable 1" valves.

So, does anyone have a spare pump with the 3/4" valves they'd part with?

I've just rebuilt ours and had a terrible time trying to get even new 1" valves to seal properly. In the end I managed to find at the local wreckers a Japanese mechanical pump with the same diaphragm diameter. It had smaller valves (about 3/4") but they sealed really well. A few minor mods. to the valve housing, reassembly and the pump now works as it should. Total cost $5.

You could do a test for confirmation of your suspicion Stan. If you disconnect the line from the fuel filter, then crank the engine over, if fuel does not immediately flow forth from the line, then you'll know for sure that your thoughts were correct. :)

I have a spare I think. Will need to rummage in the shed...

Cheers, Rich....that'd be a great help if you do. As Occie's now my daily, I need to get this sorted pretty soon, I reckon.

Let me know please, mate.

What happened to the 75 Stan?Dave

I'd been thinking of selling the 75 for a while, Dave and, having had a good offer a couple of months ago, I decided to take it.

Since I managed to give up work a couple of years ago my daily mileage has shrunk dramatically. Holidays and trips out were/are always Occie or the Jag anyway and, for the odd occasion I need the facility of an estate my mate can help me out.

Also, road tax & insurance were looming for the 75 so it was a bit of a no-brainer really.

Big thanks to Kevin Watkiss, who's sent me both a good 1"valved pump, and a 3/4" one for rebuild as a spare.

Cheers, mate!

I've just fitted the 1" pump, so I'll see how I go.

Stan
