Want to convert to negative earth

I'm going to convert my P6 to negative earth, should be pretty simple except for the fuel and temp gauge as far as I can see.

Is there a component I can change out on the gauges to allow them to work as intended or should I just hunt down some compatible replacements?

Hi,
As far as I can remember when I changed my mini to neg earth I didn't change any gauges.
It would only be the time clock and rev counter if fitted that would need replacing plus swapping the + and - leads on coil and repolorise dynamo to charge correctly.
Clive.

Do you know about the P6 specifically? Some gauges continue to work, some work backwards and some stop working all together depending on make and model from what i gather online.

Coil, dynamo and regulator, if I remember rightly.

Swap the leads on the coil, repolarise the dynamo, and I believe swap out the regulator. It's been a while since I've done one.

Regulator with a Dynamo doesn't need anything changing, Moving coil instruments I believe will work correctly without any modification

Hi, The dynamo will re polarize just by the change over of the battery leads, if it makes you feel better take the heavy brown lead off the big term on the back of the dynamo and flash it on a couple of times. The only other thing to watch is sometimes one of the contacts in the regulator can stick shut straight away, so remove the cover before hand to check and unstick it. The only other thing not mentioned so far is of course the radio if there's one fitted.

I agree with what is said above. The gauges are bimetallic, they work on wire generating heat to heat a bimetal strip. There could be a problem if you have had the voltage regulators for the guages changed to solid state. The original bimetal types are not polarity sensitive.

Some people like to flash the generator, but it is not really necessary. Swap the leads on the ignition coil is a good idea, although I think it would still work if you did not, but your spark might not be as hot.

It will work with the coil wired the wrong way around but it will wear the earth electrode away on the plug instead of the centre electrode.
