Waterpump

The waterpump on my p6 started leaking, the shaft seal seems to be failing and there is a lot of play in the shaft. Needless to say I need a new pump, but since my car is fitted with an SD1 engine I need to make sure I get the right one. I believe in order to fit a SD1 engine in a P6 the waterpump needs to be changed for a p6 one, so I expect that I need a standard p6 pump (GWP310).

Can someone confirm this is indeed the standard p6 pump and pulley assembly?

Thanks! :D

Hi, also known as the 'short nose pump' used by modifiers when fitting the engines in
other cars where the space is tight. Because they're sought after the price for them
reflects that.

As anyone who has changed one of these knows what looks like being a very simple job can turn into a nightmare because some of the bolts are ridiculously long and thin and shear in the most inconvenient way.

You will need a bolt kit and some good anti seize. Better still a stud kit.

Do you know if the required bolts are the same if you have an SD1 engine? I believe the timing cover is different..

The timing cover I believe has a different oil seal and a deeper arrangement for the oil pump gears. I'm fairly certain it's the same other than that. It's generally regarded as a good upgrade for earlier motors. Others will confirm. I've changed two of these s*dding pumps and both times I've had to drill out and re-tap. If it wasn't for that it'd be a simple job.

This kit seems to be made specifically for the job. Which implies there is a difference. Amazing how something so simple can become a daunting task!

I think that's for those who are converting a later serpentine motor, in which case of course everything at the front is different.

There are a couple of new ones on Ebay at the moment. The SD1 units are completely different and there is a variety of them with minor changes. There is also a later version for the Viscous fan P6Bs which also vary somewhat as they also fit Buick V6s amongst other Gm products. the model you have, for the fixed fan, can be interchanged as long as it has the same fan coupling piece, later production ones (of any model) have a much better impellor design - curved and more blades.

Thanks everyone, I have ordered a pump and a set of bolts. Let's hope I get her back on the road swiftly, I'm currently using my girlfriend's '78 saab 99, which is fun for a change... but I miss that V8. :p

Penatrating fluid will not do much good as the threads are too far in, unless soaked for a week or two. A good tip is to start the engine and get it to running temperature, this will expand the metal bolt holes and ease the threads a little, it might make the difference between getting a bolt out and breaking it.

Thanks for the heads-up everyone, I'll start soaking the bolts as soon as I get home from work. It'll be several days before I can get around to it, so maybe it will help. :) I really hope they come undone nicely..

Has anyone found a replacement for the ERC2810 water pump for those cars fitted with the viscous coupling fans? Even a bearing and seal would help to overhaul these pumps.
Thanks, Bruce

Hi Bruce,

T R. Spares in Sydney have the parts to overhaul them. Either you supply your pump and they will refurbish it or it is on an exchange basis.

The impeller and ceramic washer are replaced along with the bearing and seal.

bit behind the curve here, but the MGB V8 pump is also a short nose unit; and fits in where the standard P6 one does.

Hi Rob,

As far as I am aware, the MGB V8 and the Rover V8 are one in the same. There were subtle differences including inlet manifold, exhaust manifolds, oil pressure setting and pistons.

What sort of fan arrangement did the MGB V8 come with? Fixed or running through a viscous coupling?

Ron.
