Weird spanner

At 1:07:44 the invisible alien knocks a spanner to the ground from his hiding place high up in the observatory.
A bit of googling and I found this - I've never seen one before, I'm guessing it's an American idea but I do like it if only for novelty value.

think one end fits 6-7" and other 7-8" or maybe its an american efficiency device so operator can do up 2 nuts at once. well one often has to tighten ones nuts !

I've got one of these spanners myself and occasionally find a use for it. There must have been some very good and obscure reason why Crescent made these but I haven't discovered it yet.

All of the above suggestions are valuable tips though, so perhaps I should check them out again. Americans don't seem to have been very good at making metric tools in the past so I doubt whether that's a possibility, especially since the tool is clearly marked 6" and 8". I wonder if Crescent made others like this in different sizes?

there is a light score mark in the middle, you just twist and snap and voilà, you have 2 adjustable spanners for the price of one.
Very handy for getting into tight places...:p

They are actually quite useful, particularly when working on Agricultural stuff like gates where the nuts and bolts date back to the stoneage and are weird sizes. you can set them so that you have the two sizes you need in one spanner

It is definitely imperial sizes only. You can tell that as it only has its sizing in quoted in inches.

I mess with the Americans at work, by asking for a metric shifter. First I show them what a shifter is, then show them the sizing on the handle. If it has only inches then it can only be used imperial fasteners. If metric sizing, then only metric fasteners, and if it has both then it can be used on either. And if anyone believes the last sentence, then I do have some great beachfront property in Kansas to sell you!

I mess with my French colleagues like that, too. The best part is, we work on Metric and Imperial equipment and it bends their brains that I can go up or down sizes in my head for AF spanners.
Sometimes, for a giggle, I will tell one of them they need an 8/16"spanner for something, and then they start muttering about "Les Anglaises et leur systeme merdique".......:p:D;)until I tell them to do the Maths, and the light comes on for them.

I would like to nominate you for prime minister of England , just what is needed at this point in time........... straight talking, a wink and a tongue in cheek attitude...

I sold a couple of open ended spanners a few weeks back on ebay. They had one end a AF size and the other a metric, both clearly marked.
They are the only ones I've ever seen,I think I've still got a picture somewhere.
