Well that's different.....

Well, I've taken the old gal on a couple of short trips. Tonight I've taken it to work (about half an hours highway drive). So far so good. No nasty leaks/smells/smoke. Can't believe an incorrectly done compression test (by a qualified mechanic) was the worst part of the whole job, and the actual problem was a combination of loose bolt, no baffles and poorly set-up PCV system. Nearly caused me to lose the car thinking the engine was busted. Also found my vacuum leak - professionally rebuilt Holley is leaking between the body and base-plate. Will have to remove it and see if tightening the screws fixes it...

You're 100% right. Due to my life experiences I usually plan for worst case scenario, but then also find myself expecting worst case, which it's often not. The temp gauge (next problem along with carb leak) is a classic example. I thought I had some real problem with the engine intermittently overheating for no discernible reason - nah, just a dicky gauge lol.
