What could be done for the sound

@Simon! Please tell me about your experiences! You wrote you would remove the last box - was it a good idea or not? I would also prefer also a more significant sound but I have two reasons not to do it without any aid/experience-report: First of all I am not sure what happens with the engine's behavior. Normally, the structure of the exhaust system is a compromise between what is good for the engine and what is good for the noise/legal side.

Dear Reinhard,

I tried it just in the garage, but not on the road. The sound level it self is not that much more at idle, but it get's really present when revving.
I don't know why, but it crackled a bit after revving. It is a nice sound, a little sporty note when revving but the burble itself does not increase. It sounds a bit more sonouros. Maybe it is because of my stainless system.
I haven't made a decision yet, maybe I ask a local company for a real dual system like the guy on the photos I linked did.
If you want to change your sound the easy way, this is the way to go.
I want a little deeper, beefier more masculine sound and I think I could achieve it with a dual system some time...

correct in that exhaust systems do affect power and torque bands. all about gas flow and back pressures. on the whole many car systems have excessive back pressure and the betters designed systems will aid engine gas flows .sound is secondary but essentially a larger bore will give a deep resonance and loud output as will straight through etc
a banana type 4into 2 into one is often the best setup with twin outputs often more for show or simple to fit versus combined . many production manufacturers will where possible save costs where possible so a simple 'joined' system is a big factor. that said ether are many rover P6 users whom have modified systems .
maybe we ought to have a sort of list? e.g. banana type? single? twin? with costs . issues of installing and noise satisfaction ( assuming legal levels of curse )

I built mine from bits and bobs lying around in order to get going.
3500s manifolds and 90 deg bends, flexible balance pipe after bends, 2" s/s into 2 round glass pack silencers then out at 45 deg to exit before rear wheels.
The ground clearance is a little tight under the silencers so I have ordered some Arvinode mufflers from the States. I have an Arvinode system on a '65 Mustang and it is a sound like no other. It was used for a few months on the Mustang in 1965 then deleted. Some enthusiasts managed to get it reproduced and I bought one for my car.
I just bought the mufflers only for the Rover, they use sound cancelling technology and improve torque. The good thing is that they are only marginally bigger than a 2"pipe.
Here is a clip on a Mustang, cant wait to get them on the Rover.

Do you have a pic of the muffler you bought? Im going down the road of a dual exhaust system and have the battery box to contend with.

Yeah I did - Lazy and short term memory loss. Good post . Just what I wanted to see.

When I was a youth with my first car, a BMC mini, it was popular to cut a bit of the end of the exhaust and graft on a suitable length of Copper pipe. It made a
different sound and was just what we wanted. I did it to my mine and of course it was polished every week end with Brasso. ;)
now to find a copper pipe that big that fits?

Fine work, your exhaust system !
What I did not see on one P6 (sorry) is a endpiece system which fits to the rear end style of this car.
The original muffler looks like all engineers were out for holiday and the one guy left in the purchase dpt took his chance. Cherry-bomb style muffles are much too big for this classic car.
Have a look on the endpipes (and the curves !!) of the Triumph Stag system, the rear end of the P6 really would benefit.

Many thanks, Simon, for your very good explanation! I will try it because I have a standard exhaust system (mounted by Midas in as I believe 1995 - it still works fine!). Perhaps the result is a bit different - we will see and I will report:).

What I definitely not want is a dual exhaust system. I am afraid that at the end it is perhaps a frustrating experience because it can effect some troubles in different areas.

PS: we should discuss such topics also in the other forum, shouldn't we?
