I'd rather not write what I do remember:
Four rivets, top of front wing in engine compartment a bit to the back/windscreen ... .
But what does it shield?

Its a water defector in the area of the steering idler.

Gonna look for the opposing rivet holes.
I was totally confused when I did not find them on several occasions. Now I know where to search!

I have an idea that it protects the wiper motor from water splashes, but I may have made that up

That is exactly what it does. On my car when I removed it whenever I went through a big puddle the wipers stopped working... Had to pull the casing off the motor and pour the water out...

It is supposed to block off the top half of the big hole and rides on the steering link so the water running down the side of the guard stays in the guard and doesn't get into the wiper motor or the recess under the drag link
